Hi need your advice...

I own a Sony HDR-CX12 Handycam, record HD video on Memory stick is a pain as 8GB only good enough for about 1 hour of recording... So i need lots of GB of storage...

Come across this adaptor from Kingston that allow me to put a SDHC micro card into a Memory Stick Pro Duo holder to use it in Sony products... I almost bought it but it give error message on my handycam. Salesman told me it work fine on PSP...

Anyone every try these products? Unable to test on other brand like Sandisk and Transcan...
Any comment on this...

8GB price compare:
SDHC about $40++,
3rd party MS Pro Duo about $60++,
Sony MS Pro Duo about $100++...

So Sony = 2.5 x SDHC and 3rd Party = 1.5 x SDHC...

That is why i consider using SDHC if possible...

Thanks...

To record AVCHD on SDHC, you need a memory card that can hold up to read/write speed of at least class 4 or above.

Using a microSD will not work because microSD are not fast enough for the reading and writing speed requirement.

Hi DXNMedia,

Although i am unable to find what do you mean by "Class 4 and above", but fond the following page from WiKiPedia (search title "Comparison of memory cards")...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_memory_cards#cite_note-exp12in2-25

Sad to know that MicroSD/MicroSDHC only transfer at 10mb/s, which is only half of Sony.

Just for knowladge, what transfer rate is required for AVCHD?

And if Sony's Memory Stick transfer rate is 20mb/s, does it mean that Sandisk's Memory Stick will do the same??

Thanks alot... I think i will still stick to Memory Stick...:)

DXN- While i have totally no experience with AVCHD, if what you say is correct. Then MicroSD can be used, the 8Gb Micro SD card that I am using in my phone right now is a Class 4.

Interesting point to note...I thought MicroSD cards are technically slower in the throughput.
Lemme do more research and find out if there are differences in classification category between microSD and SDHC.

Some of the memory sticks may have a proprietary chip inside to prevent OEMs or other solutions from being used....you're talking about Sony man..... :D

Pulled off from a quick google:
"AVCHD camcorder makers have typically stuck with 13 to 15 mbps bitrates. While Class 4 SDHC flash cards have write throughput of 32 mbps"

Based on calculations & specifications, in order to be a Class 4 standard for SDHC, the card need to sustain a minimum rate of 4MB/sec......Class 6 would be a minimum of 6MB/sec...

Looks like u are right...Class4 MicroSD is the same classifications as SDHC.
Probably it's the issue of Sony being proprietary then.. :D

Same issues that I have with Panasonic's P2 cards....Technically if I use a CF with a PCMCIA adaptor, I get a PCMCIA SSD, which is what Panasonic's P2 is....but P2 cards from Panasonic are raided cards to get highest throughput, and they have a proprietary raid controller built into the tiny card so that you cannot use any other solutions even if you can find the fastest CF card with a PCMCIA adaptor. :D

Even a quick trial with Sony's professional SxS card vs. a typical ExpressCard34 SSD have significant speed and compatibility issues. :D

I have used the microSD adaptor for my PSP and what I know is that the MicroSD MS Pro DUO Reader is compatible only with MicroSD cards up to 2GB size.

Glad to know that I wasn't ripped off hahaha ...
