Scratched Lens

Got my 1st DSLR -- The new Canon 500D and ordered lens hood and filter online (cheaper). Unfortunately, i brought the camera to bangkok and adelaide during my travels and scratched the lens!!!!

Lenspen, cloth, cleaning fluid doesn't seem to help.

How?!!!!!

So far I do not see it affecting my picture quality. Is it true that if the scratch is more towards the side it does not affect the light coming in through the center of the lens?

How can I best fix it? Some guys ask me to go to Canon @ Vivocity there to ask but is it fixable and will it cost me a bomb to fix?

with the protection (filter & hood) u have, how did u manage to scratch the lens? what lens is it?

if it is the 18-55 kit lens, it rather cheap to replace. check the B&S section.

Since it is not affecting the IQ and if u can live with it, i suggest dun bother abt it.

Cleaning fluids or tools will never do repair jobs. It's glass, not some car paint with lots of layers where you can repair minor scratches.
It's true, the further away from the sensor the less any scratch or dust particle will affect your image. There was even a picture posted here which only look a bit out of focus .. but the front element was actually split. So you can still use your lens and take pictures. But you should avoid situations with strong lights in the frame. The scratch is an optical obstacle and will affect the light and finally the image.
If it's your kit lens (cheap 18-55 without IS) you can easily get a new one here from Buy and Sell. You can also upgrade to the IS kit lens. Cost of replacing front element can easily be higher than a new kit lens (without IS).

How much it'll cut down depends on type and grade of filter. If u just want to protect the lens, just get a multi-coated protector (MC protector).

Just shoot and enjoy photography.

IF the scratch causes flare problems, just use a very fine permanent black marker pen and blacken the line.

Also, I have a beat-up old lens with scratches that is SHARPER than an EF 100mm USM macro across all apertures.

I quickly changed my uv filter to hoya HD type which is more hardy. so far so good

Actually i meant i ordered my lens hood and filter online and as it took too long to come, I went to Bangkok first. Camera got scratched by a drunk chick in RCA in Bangkok as she handled the camera poorly.

Thought it was minor scratch but couldn't remove it after tryign the usual lens pen and cleaning fluid + cloth.

My lens is EF-S 18-200mm IS lens. I thought of going to Customer Service Center to ask for quote but it seems from what you guys say it may not be worth it at all. I guess I just have to live with the fact that this lens has significantly reduced resale value

Trying to save up for a 50mm Prime Lens! But I'm a newbie so 18-200mm will go a loooong way for me to practice first

dont be too worried.. the kit lens is cheap.. go get a better lens

Bought my lens hood here. I think it's quite affordable and easy for me to self-collect since I live nearby in Jurong.
Digi Cabi...about same everywhere lah. Just have to get a friend to drive it back for you.
Filter I bought Tokina but not sure good or not as I work such long hours I don't get to see the sun. Don't think it helps me in the night though.

Yepz. But by the time I can afford 5D Mark II....cameras may be antiques and obsolete...haha...

Anyway what I am not sure is whether EF lenses can mount on 500D. Not written anyway so I assume can right? Because I want to buy EF 50mm f1.8

EFS and EF can be mounted on 500D.

Only EF can be mounted on 5DMKII.

Anyway, if the scratch doesn't affect your shooting, just carry on with it. Its the output that matters.
