scenes from orchard road

and btw, what lens are you using for the blur angel shot?
i find the bokeh is just nice leh i am finding this kind of effect with my nikon kit lens but sadly i know, i cant make it. XD

santos normally uses 85 f1.4 as per his signature. he ever mentioned how he shoots; squats, and from lower than the normal eye level. maybe you should go through his whole thread, it'd be worth it.

@linkandzelda: Thanks! Yup, you're correct.. I used an 85mm f1.4 in the blue angel shot.

@shootjutsu: As mentioned by linkandzelda, I usually squat for these hip level shots, I find that the perspective is better, and you see less of the ground and more of the horizon. I like to go around and look for areas with great lighting and people traffic. When I find a good spot, I wait for a good subject and click :) But when the starts to get really crowded, then I stand up and aim for face level shots.

Hope this helps :)

haha cool. now i know. yup, i did tried squatting down at hip level, cos partly i'm tall.
standing at 1.88m, my eye level will be like, you-know-what. :bsmilie:
but you said when it starts to get really crowded, there are people who confirm will walk pass you, like, i still dont have the courage to snap with people walking pass me, as what i see in my viewfinder, then i just take the shot like you do. :/

Hi dannysantos,

care to share how you get that effect whereby only your subject is "lighted up" while the other areas are darkened as seen in the picture above? Is there a name for such an effect? Appreciate it!

haha, if not wrong, i bet it is the sunlight or one of the lighting at the mall, which shines on the object and he snap it. i would like to know how too!

I'm not sure if there's a name for such effect :-) the way you can get this effect is to look for a ray of light within a predominantly shaded area. In this case, the light is coming from the sun's reflection from the windows behind me. When you have this set up, put your camera into spot metering mode, and just wait for the subject to cross that light, then click! If you do it right, you should get this effect.

Hope this helps ;)

Very well done i should say.

@Slash56: thanks, bro... glad you liked it :)

gosh i admire your way of shooting.
BUT! i'm gonna find my way of street photography too haha.
i guess i need a zoom lens rather than prime then..
cos i always wanted to zoom to people and birds and stuffs like that but i couldn make it,
and that's so sad. :(

I would recommend prime lenses for street photography... it forces you to anticipate how the scene is going to look in your viewfinder even before looking at it, so composition is faster. Lately, I've been using an 85mm f1.4. I also used a 20mm f2.8 for wide angle shots (previous shots in this thread).

Just keep shooting, bro... you'll get the hang of it then you'll be able to find your way to street photography :)

heyhey that's so nice of you.
you know what, cos right now, i'm quite torn between prime and zoom nikon 55-200mm.
i would like to do street photography *i think it is my first love* and candid portrait/portrait, as i play them to snap my friends. however i cant decide to buy which one as if i top up a little bit i can get the zoom.
hey you mean 85mm is also a prime too?
thank you for the advice bro you are damn nice ;)
