so difficult to understand meh?

Just take the differences in fare price (80's vs now) and multiply by the number of riderships, then minus the increase in cost of the electricity comsumed, we will know how much went into the black hole liao.

and you forgot about small things like wage increases, capital expenditure, taxes paid, etc.

I guess if they cut the bonuses of the few top man in SMRT, they can easily cover any increases in energy prices.

and you're wrong...
go read the annual reports on how much the few top men are paid.

I am not arm chair critics, I have a solution to the energy crisis!
Go and buy pertrol from our northern neigbours, at half price only!

malaysia subsidies their fuel prices...

:o
Mr muscle will be there to stop u

that's exactly my point, if you cannot do it one one way, then do it another way by putting new people in place.

raising all of these things are fine, cannot help if it is tied into oil. however if their profits are huge and leaders ok the raise in fare, then yep...protest with your ballot. that's where the issue lies. if the government allows them to stick it to you when they are making millions, then remove them from their post. simply put, if you don't want them to raise the fares and seemingly they are a company that is doing well, and your official votes to allow them to raise the fare, then your official is not representing you so why keep them in office.

what i see is a company that has plans many many years down the road and explained or presented these plans to officials as a way to get them to increase fares. having said that, this would mean that if officials ok the raise in fares then they basically have already consented to keeping this company for many many years to come...hmmm, this would then imply that no other company is going to get a fair shake at getting the government contract and could it be because perhaps so many decision makers are possibly stakeholders in these same companies as well?

...purely speculative and just something to consider since it seems singaporeans are literraly being taken for a ride by more than just the transportation companies.

have a good day :)

transport providers only allowed to raise rates once a year. hence to be fair we should compare the year-to-year change in oil prices.

so once again, which year did oil prices go down?

do you understand what fluctuate mean?

transport providers are allowed to raise rates once a year.... I believe these only apply to public transporters only. As usual, most of us are either pay freeze or pay cut and no annual bonus given. With such cost increase here and there, can us all able to swallow it?

so once again.... do you know what fluctuate mean?

and you forgot about small things like wage increases, capital expenditure, taxes paid, etc.

Oh... you forgot how much the dividends divided to the shareholders. :sweatsm:

I think after all these debates going on..... we should roughly knows how the things are working around. Next time we all need to be more wiser.

do airlines do wad our public transport operators do- annual fare increase?
:bsmilie:

I am not stooping to anything - I am just speaking the truth - you did enter a post saying what I described. Are you denying the truth of my observation?

Please note the difference between an observation and an allegation.

Cor, you're disappointing. Really thought you had a little more about you than stooping to that.

This topic comes up every time there is a fare hike. I've done a comparison on a previous thread, many many months ago. Do some diligence if you will.

As for selectiveness, you have yet to show ANYTHING concrete to support your contention about the lack of affordability of fares.

Lastly, I only debate your points, I don't stoop to insinuate anybody's origin. If you can't do the same, then I can only say you are even lower than the establishment you so detest.

1. So, you expect that the person you are trying to make a point to, to dig up your past posts to support the point you are trying to make? You apparently don't realise that you have the burden of proving the points you are trying to make.

In that case, to borrow a leaf from your book, and purely as a rebuttal to your untenable position, I think you can dig up my past posts showing support for my contention about the lack of affordability of fares. Its somewhere in my four thousand or more (not even counting kopitiam) posts. While you are at it, perhaps you can also google for other posts I may have made in some other forum supporting my contention - after all, do your own due dilligence as you said.

2. As said before, anything not specifically rebutted, is deemed to be admitted. Review the past correspondence as part of your due dilligence.

3. Try not to put words in other people's mouth. I did not allege anything about your origin or detesting of any establishment. I merely made an observation on a post which you yourself posted - if you translate that into an allegation, that is your prerogative, and if you choose to admit the truth of that observation, well once again, that is your option.

virgo's original question was that when oil prices go down, do the transport companies lower their fares. I'm asking since transport companies can raise their fares only once a year so when was the last time that oil prices went down on an annual basis?

what if one month oil prices go down, then transport companies lower their fares, then next month oil prices go up, then transport companies want to raise their fares, then the PTC says too bad got to wait until next year before can apply to raise fares. So is looking at short term fluctuations in oil prices meaningful?

:bsmilie:

They can't adjust their pricing cos of competition out there....

Our public transport can... cos there is only 2 players, no competition or i say a little competition.... :bsmilie:

someone already linked to the reports at the beginning of the thread...

i saw that... its pretty profitable... those who have extra cash can invest in their shares, sure make money one.

hmmm.... price went up then down, up again then down.. up again then down.... what is the difference when you add both up and take the average?

Price increase in public transport is only up up up and up... best is only once a year, which they can use this excuse as an advantage. Thanks for pointing this out.....

oil prices have risen > 1400% since 1999.
Has transport costs risen even 20% since 1999?

even if the once-a-year fare adjustment is not used and there's a drop in oil prices... i don't think the transport providers will adjust the fares downwards. it won't make sense for them to do just that as this will shrink their profit margin and in turn, hurt their shareholders.

whether there's a fare increase or no fare decrease... we are all screwed by living in a small country with monopolised transport industry.

we just have to bear with it lah. after all, we've been through quite a number of fare increases and we still patronise the services they provide. looks like we have got NO choice for our everday commuting needs (unless you want to cycle or walk lah).
