One thing to consider is that Hong Kongers may be paid much more than local equilvalents.

I know that in my field of industry, they get paid at least double our pay.
That's true, most of their living expense are more expensive than us. Which make Singapore Bus service even more unfavourable :sweat:

actually, y need compare our public transport system to other country? :nono:

self-improvement would b betta den any comparison w/ other Tom-Dick-Harry. we already 1st world country, should b setting benchmark liao...
That's the funny part, sometime our gov or some organisation say Singapore is much better when compare to other countries. But when something is unfavourable show up, then thery will say it different, you shouldn't compare apple with orange... :sweat:

They are raising the fares for the MAIN REASON of keeping healthy PROFITS. What rising costs???

It is not because labor and petrol costs increased meh???

how many of us got pay raise for the past few months?? :angry: what pay rise.... the top management again?

There are more to come. Taxi fare hike is on the way. All other things will increase as well.:o

Petrol prices increased 3 times over a month period without any valid reasons. SPC petrol company at the same time reported a surge in profit to 43% for this year. This is really outrages. People have written into ST forum on the petrol increase and the parties involved did not bother to respond at all. Till today, Singaporean still get fine if they did not fill up their tanks to 3/4 mark at the causeway. The petrol companies are laughing to the bank all these years and they are still protected by the law to ensure their sales will not go elsewhere.

MM Lee have mentioned or cautioned that Singapore should not allow the recent property prices to rocket up as it will hurt the economy and foreigner might find Singapore too expensive a place to stay. On the other hand, petrol prices and all other things are allowed to rise for no good reasons.:dunno: Why the double standard in the approach to address raising cost?:think:

Best of all..........the opposition parties are totally quite about these affairs when these affects the daily life of the heartlanders.:thumbsd:

Basically, they compare when it suits them , and says we cannot compare when it doesn't suit them.

how come everyone only complain about the costs, never complain about the fruits of the economy ie. property yield, stock markets, highest starting pay for fresh grads in so many years...

Sorry, I don't see how I have enjoyed the fruits of the booming economy. It is more like I suffer from it.

Firstly, the rent for a condo/hdb unit has gone up something like 20-30%, if not more. transport cost had gone up from last year, if you can still remember. many other daily essential items have gone up in price. But my pay has not gone up. I have no property to sell, neither do shares. Please tell me what I have benefited?

I don't know, perhaps you can email the writer to ask him.

However, I doubt that your or my salary has increased the way they have:

SMRT & percentage gain from previous year:

2003 = $72.2m - 0%

2004 = $90.2m - 24.9% increase
2005 = $126.6m - 40.4% increase

2006 = $103.6m - 18.2% decrease

2007 = $135.8m - 31.2 % increase

Average increase for last 4 years = 19.6%

2003 = $19m - 0%
2004 = $49.2m - 155.9% increase
2005 = $51.5m - 4.7% increase
2006 = $56.1m - 8.9% increase

Average increase for last 3 years = 56.5%

Do you think any of the average Joe's salary increase by 20 to 56% yearly over the last 3 to 4 years?

that's not a very fair way to compare. how has their gross revenue grown?

when is about this type of dirty affair, ppl remember the opposition.
when is time to show our support for them, all the votes go to the govt.
now, they are not in power, what do you expect them to say? :rolleyes:

:bsmilie:

Citizen here deserve to eat the shi.t their loving govt drop for them... they were the choosen/prefered one right?:rolleyes:
Don't know now kaoz pei for what..;( nb....

Well, honestly.. NO.

But then think from another perspective, say our transport companies changed from privatized to government owned. No profits involved. We should have cheaper fares right? Wrong, mainly because government owned enterprises have no incentive to cut cost or improve service. They would probably just do the minimum to get their funding and we, as commuters would probably pay more for less.

The profit debate has been ongoing for public services over many countries for ages. Ultimately, while it sucks that our transport system is not perfect and all, it may be worst. Allowing it to be privately owned gives the owners incentive to maximize profit and cut cost, hence lowering fares in the long run. Now, being a duopoly, the government has to stop rampant fare increases and profit taking by imposing price ceilings and service levels to adhere to.

IMHO, the lessor of 2 evils. Of course, the big gainer is the body that collects the tax ;) go figure..

That's purely theory on paper only. :sticktong

Sg govt, ministries and stat boards wouldn't be where they are today if not for their "competitiveness". Are you sure that are not able to do a better job than those execs and directors in those companies.

The idea of private company are optimising resources and maximising profits are true.. they optimise by streamlining (read: cutting) routes and maximising profits by charging us more than necessary as shown in their fiscal reports, these companies have exceeds even Sg GDP growth.

Since when we have "duopoly". :confused:

All i can say is:

Thanks to the 66.6%.

More "good" years ahead :thumbsup:

yeah...its tough isn't it, and yet the govt aiming for 8million? citizens within a few decades (imported or not), what then? imagine double the crowd/jam/traffic + rocket high prices for necessities...

time to think properly whent he next election is here.

if u are not happy, then walk a little more lor.. :)

Say bye bye to our GST rebate $.

Time to own a car? :think:
