malaysia subsidies their fuel prices...

You are right, a poorer nation can subsidise its people to pump pertrol into their private cars.
But a rich nation like ours, cannot even subsidise the energy for public transport.

and you forgot about small things like wage increases, capital expenditure, taxes paid, etc.

you also forgot small things like revenue from advertisement, interest earned on the surplus and capital expenditure paid using public money.

The original point is that someone said that singapore is a monopoly for transport providers. I said find me an urban area with many different transport providers serving it.

that someone is me. i said singapore's public transport is being monopolised by transport providers and not singapore is a monopoly for transport providers.

wah ! this thread is still going on ?

Fantastic quote.

and not to mention their record profits they are making now - it's rather insensitive

Datam talks about energy prices but have the transport operators EVER decreased the fares when price of oil was low?

we've already discussed this a few pages ago...which year did price of oil drop?

During the last application, much of the same arguments of anticipated higher oil prices and operating costs were advanced; and despite these, the public transport companies turned in record profits.

Their projections and fears were, in the event, found to be widely off-target. On these precedent grounds alone, the Public Transport Council (PTC) should reject the present application for a fare increase.

this is ridiculous. raising fares in anticipation of rising oil prices. what if the oil prices do not rise and fares have been raised? the commuters then are screwed. nobody will follow up with whether oil prices did eventually rise or not after the fare adjustments.

Instead of approving another hike, the PTC should tell the public transport operators themselves to "go take a hike", in the greater interest of all commuters.

i like this statement...

there's your answer:-
My answer to what question?

public transport is being subsidised in Singapore. fixed costs just not variable costs.

Brother Datan:

Can you share with us, what fixed costs are being subsidised?

we've already discussed this a few pages ago...which year did price of oil drop?

does it matter which year? they have never reduced fares due to drop in oil prices.

so do you think they will reduce fares when oil price now drop to $10 per barrel?

like narayana says to them "go take a hike"

hehehe...you guys are all barking up the wrong tree

complain bitch whine all you want you're never going to get anywhere and look at you guys, all trying to prove a point and trump one another. you unhappy, vote new blood in, what more needs to be said. it's incredible how so many people will argue ridiculous points when all you have to do is vote people out if you are not happy. everyone so quick to find fault when the fault lies with you for putting people in power to represent you if they not doing what you want.

you can't protest (you can, but who gonna do it), almost all of you are afraid of crossing your government and it does not take a rocket scientist to know that it is so easy to stick it to people here because no one will do anything but whine like a baby.

this whole thread really shows how idiotic and self serving people can be. It seems most all of you are mad at higher fares but then you guys bicker about the cause of it haha...you will never get anywhere.

i think about 6 men in a canoe in the middle of the ocean that all decide to start paddling because they are in agreement to find land. yet each of these 6 men are paddling in different directions and different timing and are only actually fighting each other and getting nowhere when at the start they all had a comon thread...

this is how you all look and this is why you will never get anywhere with this issue...simply vote in new people to tell those in power that if they don't do the job, they're out!

my dad always told me it is better to have big balls than a big mouth so grab your pair and stand up for yourselves instead of being runover and fighting about the cause when the outcome is the same where you will have to pay anyway...have some balls and put new people in because the writing is on the wall and if you cannot see it with the madness of enblocs, real estate, cost of living, etc., etc,. you will soon be priced right of your own country.

in my view, what right do people that gave themself an insane raise have to stick it to any singaporean for more money be it gst or allowing higher transportation fares. i would see that as slap on the face but it seems people here don't mind, forget, or believe all the candy coated rhetoric that goes on here...grab your pair and say enough is enough, it frustrates me to see how no one will stand up but yet argue in the background like whining girls...sorry ladies. i mean camon people, point that canoe in the right direction, start paddling together in rhythem, and you will find what you are looking for.

best of luck, n really, who cares what the cause is...kiasu kiasu kiasu, throw that mindset away and work together

Well said. I think Singaporeans in general are afraid of change. As long as they can have 3 meals a day and with a channel to complain, they will still go back to their old ways when the voting ballot is in front of them. Who cares about fare increase right? Sad...

so w/ fare increase wad improvements will we c?

more leg space? higher bus frequency? high-def TV mobile w/ surround sound? :bsmilie: shorter journey from point "A" to point "B"? more adverts tt obscure our view ourside till we cant c our destination? bus bunching in greater numbers? :bsmilie:

so far airconed buses r d oni pluses ttz obvious to me.

can we vote d fat cats of PTC, ComfortD.. out if they not doing a satisfactory job?!

"You're Fired!"

Mr Datan:

When a barrel of oil increases by 100% in terms of cost, it doesn’t mean the electricity cost has to increase by 100%. You get a lot of things out of a barrel of crude oil.
First grade petrol goes to the Aerospace.
Second grade petrol goes to the automotive.
Next we have industry solvents and diesel to generate electricity.
Followed by plastics and then tar for metal road.
Therefore, energy prices and electricity prices are related but not proportionately related.

Further more, we also use natural gas to generate electricity. Natural gas is so much cheaper than fossil oil.

I think to shut the gap, we need hard figures.

The average ridership is 1.3 million. A fare increase of 10 cents = $130,000
If 1 kw cost 8 cents, I can buy 1,625,000 kw a day.
From my previous calculation, electricity consumed per day is only 1,071,106 kw per day.
Does this figure tell a story?

Brother Datan:

the fixed costs of the infrastructure like MRT tunnels etc.

you yourself brought up this point, how can you not know it is a subsidy?:dunno:
