...just checked...LORDS retailing the SB600 for around $395 (with GST included) for cash...guy there says that the feel of the flash is good...but my main concern is...does anything electronically good and durable come out of China? I'm quite concerned on turning my photography from an Oriental gem (made in Japan) into a Asian monster  . Sigh...is that a reality we have to live with these days?

Well, there are documents & ISO standards to follow, so it doesn't really matter where it's manufactured, as long as the ISO standards are stood by, the quality is there.

If everything is manufactured in Japan, it would be damn expensive to own anything. Cost of labour is so high in Japan. The costs eventually gets relayed to us consumers. :)

Go try it out at Lords' before deciding. :)

Lets see.. this may not be the right comparison.. but..

I have Shinco DVD player.. made in China.. already 3 years old.. and still going faithfully strong.. and I have a JVC DVD player.. made in Japan.. my JVC DVD player has been exchanged once, repaired twice.. and mind you.. my Shinco DVD player is used more ofthen the JVC one..

So you go figure..

This thing of things made in Japan is better.. reminds me of my dad's and grandads time.. when things made in the UK are the best.. while things made in India.. evidently under UK rule.. was inferior.. hmm..

Is the SB-600 out on store now?
If at $395, I think that is a reasonable figure.
Most of us are casual photographer.
Made in China is no problem. I am sure Nikon has its QA in place there.
Or maybe I should wait a while b4 jumping in to see if there is any problem in this "first" batch?

Yes I would think so..

As much as the SB800 (is like God sent to many people especially people like ESPN).. but it is not a miracle..

If you dont need the RAW power of the SB800.. and you are using it more for casually photography.. I see no reason to spend the extra 200+ dollars on the SB800.. also.. that 200 can be used to purchase other essential stuff like more CF.. or other things..

As for the things like a speedlight stand.. that can be bought saparately.. AS-19.. at about 10.00 per piece.. Question.. how often will you use it anyway.. honestly.. I have not used mine anymore then 5 times.. other then to do some CLS demo's..

That 200 saved.. can be used for lots more things.. especially if a flash to you.. is only used as a need to use.. and not a must use.. if you get what I mean.

And if you (generalizing) do tell me that.. the recycling time is faster on the SB800 and blah blah blah.. and that you shoot events.. then.. you should not be just using the SB800.. but the SB-8A too... and the DC batt in as well.. hehe..

Buy what you need.. and remember.. make the tool work for you.. and not the other way..

hi gadrian... thanks for your advise.. now i know wat to chose.. :vhappy: as wat u said i jus using more for casually photography no point to spend the extra 200+ ... ya $200 really make alot of diff.. at least i can still waiting for my capture 4.1 to arrival :bsmilie:

Sigh.... I bought SB800 liao... should save that 200... Dunno what the heck is cls or how to use it man... gonna waste this good flash....

CLS is good. Come to Nikon council one of these days... you'll be awed by it.. hee... :D

I decided to buy a SB-600 instead :) Don't really need such a powerful flash :)

Haha :)

ya too bad.. maybe is too costly to let public play around.. can see  cannot touch.. :nono:

Well, one feature that i use sometimes is the constant illumination button on the SB-800, when doing off-cam flashing (bounced flash a bit hard to gauge though). This helps me to check the shadows. Sometimes you might wanna bounce from different angles or even totally sideways etc..... SB-600 can't do that.

If the grey button not power enough, use 1/128 12x30Hz or something like that. So far tube never burned off.

There are inaccuracies on page one again.

You are refering to the modelling lamp feature?

Yup bro, that's the correct term. ;)

I am no expert in portraiture/lighting, but i am pretty sure the modelling lamp and arguably the stroboscopic feature can come in handy when you are going to play with lighting. Sure, it does not offer the flexibility and power of a dedicated constant light source like tungsten, but it sure is portable, wireless, small etc..... For the entry-level me, it is good. It is a little weak though, so i might even use 30-50Hz stroboscopic mode for that brief instant of burst. 100Hz will be too short. The modelling lamp function is definitely too weak when you are bouncing it off an umbrella and making use of diffusion+ bouncing off the back of the umbrella, so that's when the stroboscopic function comes in, at least for me.

Checking shadows.... Read comments that this is unnecessary with good knowledge (which i don't have :bsmilie: ) and the instant polariod review ability of dSLRs. However, i can't see nothing on a miserable 1.8" LCD, and you are going to look a bit weird taking so many test shots before hand and zooming in wasting precious time with image playback (unless you like to get tethered to a notebook via USB). It's like the argument of a light meter vs camera's built-in spotmeter.....is there a need for the former? There will be instances in which you wanna get it right the first time round as taking so many polariod test-shots isn't going to look pro. :bsmilie: It serves as insurance.

And sometimes, i do wish the GN of the SB-800 is higher.

Just bought the SB-600 from Parisilk in Holland Village for $387 (with GST). Went in not looking for it and there it was :)
