erm.. is Nissin Di866 able to trigger wireless by a Nikon D40x?

yeups. but you have to set the nissin Di 866 to slave function first. then pop up your pop up flash and set the power to the lowest rating so that the pop up flash wun't be to harsh. and oh yeah the nissin flash has to be infront of your camera because it fires off via infra red if im not wrong.

No it is not, but don't ask me which flashes are! :angel:
In this mode, the Nissin looks out for the actual flash from the D40x.
It is not the same as the wireless flash capability (known as AWL) exhibited by the mid-entry Nikons and up, where the camera body can trigger the flash wirelessly with TTL functionality.

well, from a D40x... yes.

With the D70 and above, the Nissin has TTL capability as a remote flash, because the camera's pop-up flash has AWL commander capability.

The Di866 can act as a commander and slave. It fully support iTTL for Nikon CLS. I had it for a while before I sold it. I felt that the TTL isn't as accurate as Nikon. Got a SB800 to do the job instead.

The charging and motor is quite noisy. Not to my liking. Recycling time felt longer than the stated 4sec at full power.

The sub flash is quite good as it gives a better fill when u do ceiling bounce. Only complaint..... no TTL for the sub flash... You gotta set it yourself and fire a few shots before getting the right exposure.

Everytime I sorta convince myself to get the Di866, I see these sort of comments. Doesn't fill me with much hope... darn.

Also mind you, the color of Di866 is a bit warmer than Nikon's cool white flashes. It means if you want to use more than 1 strobe, you have to buy more Di866 units or you end up messing your white balance.
