SB400 or SB600 for D60?

I just got a SB-400 for my D60 a few weeks ago, loving it.

It may be a very basic flash but i find it good enough for me. :D

where to get those flip-it for sb400? how much?

Just bought my SB600 for my D60 from Amazon...total damage including shipping S$283.99.

I used Borderlinx to ship and they are a bit more expensive compare to VPOST (base on current promo) but I think they are much faster and better service.

Will be trying it out over the weekend. :)

For another $20++ u can get a local warranted set.. ;)

sorry to revive this old thread, but I'm searching around for a cheap SB-600 to try out CLS for family group photo.
So far no luck with the B&S section. Few people selling, and many 'hungry' buyers out there.
Probably would just pay a bit more and get a new one.
But who is offering the best deal these days? Anyone has the latest price?
I saw the Nikon pricelist states $310 at AP-F (jul08). Is it still that price, or higher/lower?
Thanks for your help!

The B&S prices seem to range from $230-$280 (i bought mine 2nd hand for $260). If you can afford to throw in a little more, I'd suggest you just buy a brand new one, think you can even get a new one for <$310

Just my 2 cents ;)

if you do know where to get one specifically, do let me know! :)
So far the recent B&S prices for SB600 are all around $280, so in that case better to get new.
Even vPost is a bad idea, considering USD so high now.

Another question:
I know D80 has commander mode, so I could trigger the SB600 remotely.
What if I mount an SB400 on top of the D80 (to get better coverage than the built-in flash), and the SB600 remote? Will both fire?

You already have a built-in flash on your D60. This is good enough for filling up some shadows, etc. but won't be powerful enough if you are shooting larger groups where flash-to-subject distance is greater. I'd go for the SB-600 since the SB-400 won't do much more than your built-in flash cannot do. Fred

hmm...don't think so

Only the built-in flash can fire in 'commander mode', don't think the SB-400 can do that :dunno:

thanks for the inputs!

I wanted to use SB400 for front-on flash, and the SB600 for off camera flash (maybe placed nearer to the subject, and bounced). So far I've been unable to find this information over the net. Will try to search harder.
I've found out that SB800 on-camera and SB600 off camera will work fine, but being el-cheapo, wanted to work with what I've got.

Last resort is to buy SB600 and experiment :)
... and if SB400/SB600 combo fails, I'll have to get ANOTHER flash, SB800/900 as the on-camera master! :o

Betw the 2 choices... SB600. More versatility.

The SB400 does not have a commander mode, so cannot mount on the camera and at the same time fire a SB600 wirelessly.

U have to use your camera built-in flash as commander to fire the SB600.

If not have get a SB800 or SB900 to fire another speedlight wirelessly.

darn.... that was what I was afraid of.
So the D80 commands the SB600 via the flashes, and not the IR beam?
I recall reading that the Sb800 as on-camera master, would command the slave flashes via IR.
I also recall reading that D70 w pop-up flash set as commander, the flash doesn't contribute to the illumination, but only triggers the wireless slaves. Apparently D80 onwards solves this 'problem', ie the D80's pop-up flash can be used as fill-in flash, whilst triggering slaves at the same time.
Anyone has experience with this?

Hi

There is a discussion at Dpreview on this:

i'm using a SB-800...and i am loving it..haha

hahaha don't rub it in, pls.

So basically,
D80 + SB800 (onboard) + SB600 (slave) performs exactly the same as
D40/X/D60 + SB800 (onboard) + SB600 (slave).

To get the SB600 to fire remotely, whilst still having the main illumination coming from the front (but not from the puny pop-up), I'll have to buy an SB600 AND an SB800.

~shucks~

Anyway, thanks everyone for your help!
