SB-900 are selling cheap!!

Called multiple shops and the cheapest seems to be TK @ $675..
Alan photo quoted me $680 though.

I purchased mine at $56x elsewhere. Not too bad. . but paid the same price at TK.

Thermal cutoff is just an additional safety function for SB900 to prevent blowing the flash tube, when SB800 doesn't have that function it also pissed many people off to send the flash for service. which do you prefer?

Best to use Quantum flashes. No need to worry about overheating.

just like to share, have been using the SB900 since it was launched... never experienced thermal cutoff before....
still find nothing wrong with sb900....it works perfect for me....

experience once , swtich to sb800 at that time
go back read manual, search internet ... then off it. problem solved

You will experience it when your type of shoot or style pushes it to that. And you need a battery pack to push it to that levels.

Its seldom a problem for most wedding and portrait shooters.

Some event shooters have this problem. I got thermal shutdown a few times - red carpet, fashion runway, award presentations, etc where you sometimes bang at 1/4 to 1/2 power every second average for like 30 minutes non stop it had to shutdown to protect itself, even with updated firmware. Solution is to have another flash on the belt that enables quick change. Then change the flash batteries (finger scorching hot), open the battery door and it will cool faster.

Erm went harvey norman for browse, saw a few set of sb900 on sale, a tag showed -''$699 purchase with purchase'', so out of curiousity, I asked what the price w/o 'purchase-for-purchase', he took it out, checked, reply me 799$. I was like , WTF!, , I politely thanks the SE, and walked off....
