ah! i am looking at getting a flash too! just a couple questions.

say i want to do what benji77 is interested in doing. i think simply put it is putting the flash on the left or right of the product/model and have it to light only that side so you can get contrasty kinda pics.

i have a d70 at the moment. what is the cheapest flash that can do that? SB400? and whats the great difference between them besides power?

thanks!

SB400 doesn't support wireless CLS. SB600/SB800 for remote CLS.

Errr..., no. The onboard/build-in flash will not contribute to the scene.

D200, D80 can option to contribute or not to contribute to the scene.

Arto.

Sorry.. by mistake. Got confused there for a while.

oh my, that means to do that, i need a sb-600 at least. whats the huge difference from a 600 to a 800?

thanks!

Price  .

And a few other functions which some may say is unnecessary. A 5th batt compartment, ability to use external power, modelling strobe, and repeating flash are some of the functions which the SB-800 has over the 600.

Well, for your choice of usage, you can get something cheaper than the SB-600 if your main problem is the cost, but only a lil cheaper...

SB-400 + a SB-28 cable (latest prices seem to be good, $170 for the flash and approx $80 for the cable)
This should allow you to remote the flash to one side without the need for AWL portion of the CLS.

That should set you back about $250 which is under the cost of a SB-600 by $80... ;)

i think i will choose to go with the sb600 in that case.. btw, what does the modeling strobe do? external power sounds like something nice but i think i can make my own adaptors.

Modelling gives you a rougg preview of where the light is going to fall on when you place the flash other than on the camera.

External power normally comes from either the SB-8A or the Quantum power packs for the SB-800. ;)

hmm.. i think i might just settle for the sb 600 when the money comes in. do you guys normally put in disposable batteries or do you guys use rechargables?

Rechargables... PowerEx 2700's for me... ;)

There are plenty of information on DIY flash bounce card and diffuser from google. I intend to DIY a stofen omnibounce-like and a Lightsphere-like with some cheap supplies from Daiso.
To be updated.

I have done up my cheapo DIY flash diffuser.
I call it the mbb-LightTube ver.1.
Read about it here.

If you have the D70(s), D80, D200, or any of the pro bodies (D2), you will have a wireless commander function that can control remotely placed SB600s or SB800s with metering.

Otherwise, you can get the SU800 commander.

You will need SU800 for D2... cost they don't come with built-in flash.

BC;)

I remember reading somewhere some guy had disposables overheating and leaking inside his sony flash. Better stick to rechargables!

Tink it was over here in CS, but i can't seem to find the thread now..

Please do not worry about OTing. ;)

I need to know all I can about this flash, slave, trigger, remote trigger, Commander, CLS thing.

Its overkill for me now, but it helps plenty.

I am eyeing a SB600 too, but would like to know more facts about how it works before I jump into it.

Maybe we can also talk about the various DIY projects about diffusers, bounce materials. The firing of the on-board flash to trigger the SB600 is one of my concerns. I do not want the on board to add too much light on the subject just because I need it to trigger my SB600.

First, what camera do you use.

Second. If you are using D70, D70s, no need to worry about "on-board flash to add too much light on the subject". Because D70, D70s can't include build-in flash into scene in wireless CLS configuration. I wish I can do it with my D70s, but too bad, it can't.

Third. If you have D200, D80, you can opt to include or not to include build-in flash into scene.

Arto.

Ah yes, but should you decide to use manual, there is no way to off the D200/D80 onboard flash. I've tried it. Even if you set to "--" the onboard flash still fires away, and it can affect the exposure.

On a side note. I've just read that you can cheat your camera's max sync. If you have a D80/D200, just set to 1/250(FP), and you can now sync in manual mode over 1/250. I've tried up to 1/2000 and it still works.

hi what do u mean?

the d70s was able to go up to 1/500th while the d200 is only able to go up to 1/250th.

how do i go faster than that?
