I have achieved shutter speeds of more than 1/500 (macro shooting with ambient light on A mode) with 1/250(Auto FP) Flash Sync Speed setting on my D200 camera with a SB-800. Note that this high speed sync works only with flashes with CLS and will be limited to 1/250 when you use the onboard flash or with mounted flashes that does not support CLS.

I do syncs up to 1/4000 (manual) with my SB-800 and D200. For those interested, have to change the onboard flash to "--" mode for the high speed sync to work.

Doesn't -- means that the onboard is not firing to light up the scene??

Yes... the built-in flash is not capable of FP high speed sync.

You've got to enable the FP high speed sync in the menu too to be able to shoot at shutter speed higher than the normal sync speed. (I think only D80, D200 and D2 have this feature.)

the onboard is firing. else how to trigger the speedlights? :dunno: best is if you can, just try it yourself. else will get confused.;)

I mean it does fire to trigger off other flashes. But in -- mode, it will not contribute to the light for the scene. Thus your onboard flash is not capable to support high speed sync FP mode. Only speedlights which are CLS compatible are able to support that mode.
