Thanks everyone!

Guess what I wanted to do was check with everyone else if their extreme III cards look similar too, before I open the packaging or decide to check with Vector directly about this. Cos if everyone else's has the standard gold lettering, it'll be a bit fishy if mine looks different.
All my ExtremeIII 8GBs are all gold letterings.

damn the prices for the Extreme III 2GB went up frm $80 to $85. The 4GB went up frm $145 to $160. Ask the salesperson the reason, he mentioned due to shortage of cards, even with the resellers. thus prices rocketed.

I got a brand new piece bought today, still in sealed plastic cover. Vector Magnetics sticker on box.

Anyone interested at $85? Able to transact after Wednesday though

think memory prices will still go southwards, extreme III is now superceded by extreme IV, and resellers will be forced to clear old stocks at new-low prices.

Hi everyone. I just bought a Sandisk Extreme III 2.0Gb CF card at the IT Fair from the Vector Magnetics Booth. It was a great offer at $80 so I snapped it up.

When I opened the box, I noticed that the label containing the words "Extreme III" were not in gold as in the picture on the box, but rather in the regular silver color (similar to the Ultra II). You can see it in the picture below:

This seems in line with the description I found online on counterfeit sandisk cards in the market: http://reviews.ebay.com/FAKE-SanDisk-Extreme-Compact-Flash-Cards-Exposed_W0QQugidZ10000000001456539

Just wondering if anyone here knows anything about this, and if the card I bought was indeed a counterfeit, or simply a variation of an original card.

Thanks!

Through this, I just discovered the 2GB I bought new from a fellow Cser could be a fake, as shown in the website example even though the box itself looks original.

From the threads, he has been selling quite a fair bit of Sandisk CFs and I sincerely dont know whether he is aware of it. So buyers beware and do your due diligence.

Moderators, I think it would help Csers if this can be made sticky.

Perhaps you can PM to this particular CSer and update us on his reply.

Thanks!

I just gave a call to Vector this morning, and their service staff told me that the cards they are selling now come in silver lettering. So, I'm not sure if that the silver lettering as compared to gold is still a reliable indication of whether the card is real or not.

Perhaps a clarification with Sandisk itself would be the best. Will keep you guys posted if I get a reply from them.

SMS him this morning but no reply.

BTW the top two corners of my CF is square as shown in the sample photo of the fake and not rounded.

All my Extreme III 8Gb & 4Gb CF cards have gold letterings.

Thanks! It should be fine, then. Yeah, the prices keep tumbling, don't they! My first card was a n Ultra II 1Gb which i bought for $140 one and half years ago.. now the same card is going for only one quarter of that price.

Yeah I might just write in to Sandisk anyway to ask, but all should be well. Thanks all for your input: )

I just checked my old receipt - My Ultra II 1 GB cost me about $500 in the past!!!

Interesting.
IBM PC XT with measly hardisk (200MB?) used to cost $11,000 in a shop called Computerland at Peninsula Plaza long ago.

Looks like tech products are among the few things that resist inflation.

Anyway, Sandisk confirmed that my card is authentic. So that link on detecting fake cards might not be the most reliable source after all.

Hmmm.... Pretty confusing. Anyway, so long this card don't give me any problem, that's fine with me.:)

forget about the xtremeIII
cos the price of the xtremeIV is almost the same ;)
