Anthony, I think this is the lens for you for taking your grandson. This is a portrait lens so will be soft when wide open. Sharp when stopped down.

I am only curious about its colour and 3D effect when compared to the CY Zeiss 85/1.4. The CY Zeiss is also soft wide open and ultra sharp when stopped down to f2. The colour is really beyond words.

From what I have seen so far at FM's alternate forum, the Samyang 85f1.4 is sharp wide open and stays the same when stopped down. In fact, it's not as good at f11 & f16. So it's just a portrait lens. I have tried both the ZE 50 f1.4 and ZE 85f1.4 and both are pretty consistent, soft wide open and when stopped down to f2, incredible, especially color rendition. I own the ZE 50 and my friend the ZE 85, so I have both covered. Funny thing is that I love my 2 rojak lens, the Nikkor 105f2.5 and Pentak K 135f2.5. Both behave almost the same, just right wide open and extremely sharp at f4. OOF background at wide open is extremely buttery and I love them for portraits wide open. These are really value for money lenses and mine are in mint, collectors condition, both for less than S$600. That's why I am not willing to pay S$ 650 for the Samyang 85f1.4 available exstock at OP.

ok. you have so many precious. I think you can get the Samyang ard S$500 - 550 off the internet. The Samyang kind of make the decision between getting the Leica 80 and ZE 85 a little harder. It is like 90% of the performance for 1/4 the price. I hate to see the Samyang 35 f1.2 and 14mm f2.8 launch. :)

S$650 is totally absurd and crazy, no wonder why the Sammy haven't taken roots in Singapore yet. I got mine off eBay from 47th Street Photo for less than S$400 - too bad their stock ran out the last time I checked but hey, there's still some copies for Canon left. Anyway, two more night shots @ISO640 and f/1.4:

zzz47,

Thanks for the night shots. Some day shots to show its natural color rendition will be nice.

Seems from reviews it is a pretty good performer for the price. There are several distributors rebranding Samyang flooding ebay for better prices. The only minor nit is manual focusing at such a thin dof on a view finder . Good buy!
