the ring is almost similar to the 50 f1.8. no resistance.light and feels like it can spin if its free floating.

can use for portraits oso mah

How's the focusing speed since it's a macro? Might be too slow for less specialised applications i.e. not macro work?

what i can say is that its SAM is faster than my 18-250 lol... guess its pretty fast for a macro :)

I suppose we can treat the 30/2.8 as a standard focal length prime for apsc(45mm). Which could also do extremely close focusing.

yep. but then at F2.8, its not really that great of a bokeh machine. considering there is the sigma 30mmf1.4 to boot. but price wise, i guess its a compromise.

I "steal" ppl's thread again...

this is my first time (about to) buy a dslr, want to ask for u guys' opinion. my main interest is to shoot macro. but i hv limited budget.

I mentioned in another thread that Sony promo, with newly bought dslr u can purchase 2 yrs extended warranty for $200+ (depends which dslr model u bought) and get a SAL50m18 (RRP $215) lens for free. But the macro lens is now available (i thought it isnt until i read this thread) at below $300. i can only buy either one at the moment. The free lens promo seems too good to miss... although i've yet to know what a portrait lens can actually achieve... but everybody said that is a very good lens. so... which shld i buy...

do you guys think it's BETTER to hv the 2 yrs extended warranty? or is it "necessary" to get more yrs of warranty?

this is dependent on your future plans with your photography. do you think you are going to upgrade your camera after a year's time? will you be keeping your camera for a long period of time? ask yourself these questions.

at the moment i think i will be keeping the camera for a long time. i'm thinking to forgo the free lens promo and buy a macro lens..

what can you do with a portrait lens? sorry for this stupid question, i only just started reading abt dslr weeks ago.

u can take potraits? :O btw if im not wrong .. if u are going to take macro photography. u'll need flash and stuffs.. so i think u better ask ard what is needed for macro setups

ohhhh. icic.. then maybe when I go Sony I ask to test the macro lens. and see whether the inbuild flash will be blocked by the lens..

If you get very close to your subject, then the shadow of the lens will fall on the subject.
Just like this:

Can use the lens for close up shots of stationary objects:

That light up this, also taken with the same lens:

All in all, imo, this is a nice walkabout prime for the APSC DSLR, having a focal length of 45mm.

nice pics! how do you find this lens?

Yup, this is what happens when you get too close and use the pop up flash.
Use of a ring flash or a flash gun off-shoe/wireless (with diffuser) would produce a more even result.

A portable, lightweight, plasticky build lens that gives sharp results even @ f2.8 and can be bought for less than $300 (if you ask around several shops). I sold my 50mm soon after.
Not that the 50mm is no good, but personally I feel that the 30mm focal length suits me better.
Noticed during MF, that any object beyond 2m is in focus somehow with this lens.
Oh yeah, it happens to be able to shoot macros too.;p

Hmmm, about 3-6cm away iirc.:dunno:
Almost bumped the front end of the lens to the coin if i get too close.
The closer to the object, the longer focusing tube gets.
