Hi there,i know this is not a real photo question but something related.I was checking out some camera's at mustafa, not planning to get one anyway. So i requested just to take a look at a powershot s3is,something for my girlfriend to play around with. But the sales person constantly insists me to get a crappier camera, some lumix one.Which has less megepixels,no is,no video,no sound and the works. Are they earning more commission off crappier models or what? In the end i didn't get anything due to his ass attitude..anyone know?

having worked in electronic[laptops n stuff] sales before, i can tell you that sometimes either the manufacturer or the store itself can offer commission bonuses to its salespeople for certain models of electronics it wants to be sold more than other models and even other brands for certain periods[for a week, fortnight, month or maybe more]. The rationale behind the commission bonus maybe due to new models[this might be more manufacturer driven, and the bonus will come from the manufacturer than the store itself] to clearing up older stock.

this will explain why salesmen will try to "switch" you to other models - he may either have a higher margin from the sale [and allow u to bargain a bit more] or receive a commission bonus on top of his margin or even both.

Definitely. Common thing that happens here. We are so-called 1st world country but when it comes to buying electronic stuffs, you have to be careful. Attitude of sales people is still very much 3rd world country. Generally sales people here are driven by money more than customer satisfaction. Only very few exceptions exist.

I don't know how many times I've been embarrassed when foreign visitors to my workplace for short attachments ask me where is the best place to get cameras, etc. The first few times, after they had patronized the shops, they described to me their not-so-good experiences which made them feel as if I didn't recommend them as good a shop as they had expected. Now, I tell all new visitors that none exists in Spore. Product knowledge can be bad too. My advice is to always do your homework, know the prices and what you want.

I've experienced it myself. Some years back, I brought a friend to buy his first Canon SLR. He was sure what we wanted but this irritating salesman from Cathay Photo kept recommending us a more newbie Pentax. In the end like you, that guy didn't get our business. Usually when they recommend you another brand quickly, it's bcos they think you are inexperienced. It's degrading to me of course!

Thanks alot guys..now i'll be much more careful in getting my cams

know what you want to get, know the market price, walk in to shop, test item, take out card, swipe, and walk out of the shop...all in 10mins...

:D

ignore them. use earphones pretend to listen to music lol

sales people also have families to feed you know. Give them a break lah! :embrass:

Problem is 90% of the customers most shops get don't have any bloody idea what they want/need and simply say I want a 10 megapix camera (coz that's what my friend bought).

two ways to looking at things.

if all consumers are savvy people, companies won't need to hire sales person.

if sales person dont hit sales target at end of the month, he/she might have no job.

if consumers (some) dont listen or seek advice from sales person, he/she might not be able to get what he/she wants and might end up getting something different from initial expectations.

:) depending on which consumer u're in different areas. I might be an expert in IT/Technology stuff but when it comes to furnitures, i'm lost except for some help over the internet. :)
