but in term of his skill...he can easily outdo anyone in cs...he have so many events under his belt already...can see from his portfoilo for all the events he have covered...what makes you think he going to be an assistant...

shooting events for fun and shoot a PR event isnt the same actually.

Even if the TS has shoot many events, mostly public, has he been shooting with the view of what the PR officer/dept wants? or what he thinks is nice.

in many occasion, what we think is nice is not what the PR client wants..

"The numbers are simple -- few succeed, many fail."

Perfect quote. All too true.

All too often.. just because you can afford the best SLR and lenses.. doesnt mean you have what it takes to progress to the top. Many drop out and even more do not even get pass GO.

While photography is a relaxing and stress relieving hobby.. its not everyones' ricebowl... some have it and face it.. some do not.

Enjoy photography for what is it.

how so very true.... pple tend to forget that it's the money shots, no matter how dated how predictable how brain-numbing, that keeps the full-time photographer alive.

Is there anyone who work or worked before in a photography company full time and have a salary range (starting pay) to share? Want to have a gauge and considering doing full time.

Hi,

By now, I think you probably would have a good idea how much an assistant photographer will make in a company. The next thing is to choose to work under the top photographer in the field in that you're interested in. Beg, borrow or work for free, there is no compromise. Learning the ropes of professional photography is largely a master/disciple thing, and you will pick up bad/good habits from your boss. So if your boss is the best in the field, you'll pick the right habits to give yourself a chance to be the best in the future. Most of markets in photography will only get worse. Only the best of the best will not only survive but grow & expand.

All the best
Wesley

No need to work with a top photographer. Work with a photographer which you have good communication and relationship with.

Once you in the boat, you got to start rowing as hard as you can. Some advice for those who wants to be an assistant.

1) Make sure you make good coffee!
2) NEVER BE LATE FOR WORK!!!!!!!!
3) Never speak or give advice to your boss (the photographer) client. Just let your boss know about it and let him handle.
4) TRY not to poach your boss client......not easy as the client will look for you for CHEAPER rates.
5) Prefer not to smoke unless your boss is a chain smoker......hehehe
6) We know you have a life but be flexible with your time. Please do not give excuses that you need to go out with your girlfriends or your buddies when you need to work OT. (OT is a norm thing in our industry). You will have enough time to rest. If your BOSS abuse you, report to the Ministry of Manpower.
7) Make sure you learn and remember those setups as your boss will ask you to setup.
8) Yes you are entitled to 14 days of MC each year but we never like to see that happening. So avoid MC.
9) Tidiness is very important as well. So you must be clean.........very clean!
10)Knowledge of Photoshop is a MUST!!!!!!!

Anyone else wish to add on?

Instead of "Good morning, boss".
Try "Good shot, boss", "Very pro, boss" and "One shot, one kill, boss".

11) Be mindful of your surrounding (like a Jedi)...be attentive when a shoot is going on. NEVER play with SMS on hp like chatting with frens. It looks unprofessional.

Very good point. That is one expensive lesson.

I personally think the word 'Boss' does not really require now a days ...best is to use MR/Ma'am, coz normally for a new trend of Photographer their social life is no diff than us im i right?

Wah lau.. so much ass-kissing ah... some ppl dont like that lar...

Think most 'bosses' prefer honest, hardworking and determined ppl who are willing to go that extra mile to learn the ropes whilst pumping out the sweat.
