envy u guys..

me ite only... 1300.. got OT but still have to deduct CPF and 50 cents for CDAC...

have a small hobby.. no smoking, no drinking...

LIFE IS BORING...!!!

I'm a bit confused...

What is IT? Is software engineer, system engineer, system analyst, technical support/helpdesk, data entry, etc. all considered as IT?

Of course, the range of salary can be quite different for each of them.

* togu run in with a pail of cold water..

Don't think about the pay, get a job that fit your minimum requirements, secure it. Getting 1.4k, earn some experience, that's much better then sitting at home waiting for a 2k job.

No point comparing here and there, you'll only make yourself feeling miserable.

Just my 0.02 cents

There are many people who earn less than 2k in Singapore, in case you are not aware.

Your statement seems to suggest you have not started work yet. To those of you who are studying and still getting allowance from home, you're a very privileged lot.

take public transport, no car, no eat restaurant, dun buy luxury items, live in small flat, cook at home, no maid, no girlfriend, no pubbing.

also, use office computer, surf net at office, bath at office,. read newspaper at office, no aircon at home, window shopping. :sticktong

Yes, espn is right ... in case there are those people who still cannot believe IT industry starting pay is so darn low.

The reasons for low starting pay are many. One, there are just too many IT workers in Singapore (locals + expats). Two, outsourcing to cheaper manpower has swayed many employers to hire fewer Singapore grads (less those that have very marketable skills/certifications) and even then the pay is not comparable to past years. Third, this industry is sunset industry in Singapore - now people in IT are happy just to have a job (this is the hard truth for those youngsters who still have rosy outlook on IT).

My advice - if you are a fresh grad and have top-honours, go and try for govt job. Get a few years' experience, build up your network and then venture out. Experience + exposure is more valuable than starting pay. Up to you to believe. ;p

A little bit of OT here. I think the IT Industry is going sunset. Of course there are still some parts of IT which are sparkling but in general, it's going downhill.

The signs are here. A few years back, the govt was saying "Hey IT is hot. We need more people. So let's have a Strategic Conversion Manpower Plan for those who want to do IT". Now the SCMP is for nursing. Not IT.

Nowadays a lot of companies also outsource their IT Depts. And tender prices are getting pushed down (cut-throat) such that profit margins have become razor thin. So how to pay the staff high?

Actually, an IT degree takes 3 years. Three years ago, it is kind of obvious that IT is no longer a good degree. Just too many people. The idea is if you are exceptional, you will get GOOD pay regardless of what sector you work in. If you are just average, THEN you must make your career choice wisely if you want to secure a good job.

The moral of the story is DON'T take the POPULAR courses!!!!

It is still amazing how young people chase after the HOT job when the enter the university NOT realising that there is 101 other people doing the same and by the time they graduate.... Look for the courses with lower profile.

Example, my sis took her pharmacy degree like 15 years ago. Now she is earning like 7-8k a month. She was just an average student. Could not even get into engineering. but 15 years ago NOBODY wants pharmacy degree.

U can live on $2k per month..provided u have no committments.

and like most, live with their parents...

I have many friends who are paying monthly house rental, PUB, repaying studying loan, giving some allowance to family, pay insurance premieum... all with a pay <$2k.

It's quite common i think.

Currently to what I know, engineering grad on diploma got highest pay on pharmaceutical line, wafer fab too.
basic of average 1.8 to 3k depending on experience. standard allowance of at least $700 plus...plus...minimum monthly is for sure more than 3k.
only thing is you must be able to work on shift. 12hrs day/night rotating.

Now having attaching in a Software house, i see that companies are outsourcing to India >< or should i say *import indians experts over?

Phamaceutical is riding on the up swing of Bio science thats y pay is good. It also happened to Engineering and IT prof in the past. Just that now u see the popular prof is not IT/Engineer. Best is to earn experience and currently if got Dip dun go study Deg full time cos experience is more impt than paper qualifications. Cos for the $$ spent for Uni education it not worth it anymore as u wun be break even in 5 yrs times unless u slog ur miserable live till the max.

Afaik normal pharmacy degree holder don't earn 7-8K per month, is she in managerial level or what?
Most pharmacists earn between 2.5K to 4K+ only, not as good as some engineering, doctors and lawyer.

Pharmacist can earn $4k? Not those who sell u hair dye... LOL

Anyway IT field is quite saturated in singapore..unless u r specialised else normal helpdesk job won't get u any good pay.
