Hi All!

Does anyone have any experience or any idea what's the average basic salary for a starting full-time video editor? Please share if you do! Thanks in advance! =)

In the local context, should range between $1400 to $4k or above depending on experience, type of production and type of editing system used.

more than 10yrs ago I started off with a statutory board drawing merely around 1.7K. but not just editor job but also included camera work, graphics, basically "bao kar liao". prior to that I already have 3 years experience in productions in the Forces.

Then joined a local institute and was paid not more then 2.3k doing all aspect of production.

After which I joined another local institute as a video editor and drawed around 2.6K. altho the title was video editor but basicaly do everything from camera work, lighting, audio, editing, graphics and even conceptualise and produce. I left that school some years back.

I am not commending on private company as it really depends on your experiences, skills set and the company itself.

But what i wanted to say is many small organisation will need you to shoot, do graphic works, etc even you are editor, just be prepared if you want to have your career in this arena.

And well, Bigger organisation and broadcast will be more specialised.

Cheers.. :)

my experience
fresh out of uni $1500 (that time market was crap and i had 0 work experience)
within 6 mths $2000
another 6 mths $2300
and the rest is history.

but i think the market is pretty ok now so if u have some lil experience and a ok showreel can ask for $2k start and play the field. just my two cents dun say i spoil market or what

Uni $1500- i can understand. But i think if you are serious about learning a skill than just working.
You will want to bit the bullet. There is no shortcut in life, even u have a dip or deg does not mean that you able to do the job for creative industry

Other than going for interviews for teaching appointments, I've never once showed my qualifications after all these years in the industry. So I must admit that qualifications is pretty useless...but the trend is picking up that companies are hiring on merits that you have the prerequisites of related dip/degree.
:)

But if you are going to work for the ministry or statutory board, Paper qualification do help you for a higher pay beside showing your reel.

I think after few years, better you start your own business in that sector.

That's really sad to see those figures when comparing to those freelancer in wedding/event photography fields.....

That is why majority of good local video editors are all freelancers.

Thank you all for the replies! Truly appreciate it! By the way does anyone has any experiences as a video editor at MediaCorp? How about the workload, salary there as a starter? Please share your story with us! Thanks a lot! :)

@jasonjoseph how does the raise of your salary works (ie from 1500 to 2300 within a year)? Is it one of the policy of the company you work for?

Been there, done that about 10 years ago.
Good learning opportunities in terms of editorial skills, overworked & underpaid.
After awhile, you'll realise that you're cutting same genre & style of programs until you're so sick of it. ;)
