Safe to buy 7D?

continue/elaborate based on drake's list

7D pros:
second control dial (5D need to press and hold one button and roll the front dial. a little more troublesome)
manual flash control (5D don't have)
plastic lcd cover
can save 3 sets of user settings (oh i really miss this function)

7D cons:
supposedly 5D flash exposures more accurate
smaller, less intimidating looking, and takes up less space in the bag
er... 5D got preset modes - sports, landscape etc :sticktong

Not meaning to hijack this thread ... but on the issue of small lens selection, I've got one for sale here http://forums.clubsnap.org/showthread.php?t=177101.

I have a 7D with a fair range of lenses & accessories and I'm not even contemplating switching because IMO the 7D is one fantastic camera. In fact, I'm still constantly looking at acquiring better lenses to the detriment of my wallet :bsmilie: . But if you're starting the dSLR game fresh, then I'd suggest going for C or N, but if you're really keen on 7D/5D then hold back to see what Sony has to offer at the next PMA.

minolta lenses as compared to canon and nikon, how does it compare in terms of quality and price? i went to the minolta webbie and was abit confused by all the funny terms they have for each lens, like apo,D,G,SSM,II,cir,asp,ad,...etc  any experts to define these terms too?

???

Are u sure u are reading correctly? The 3 lenses they refer to are DT lenses that are made especially for the 5D & 7D. There are also OTHER lenses that u can use.

I'll try my best with some of the terms since I hopped onto the bandwagon for juz a year.

'G' or G lenses: The equivalent of Canon's top grade professional L lens or the Holy Trinity of Nikkors. Built with nothing but quality in mind, not price. Usually constant aperture and usually cost above $2K.

SSM: The equivalent of Canon's UltraServo Motor (USM) or Nikkors SilentWave Motor (SWM). SSM has the advantage of fast, silent and precise focusing of elements. Typically not found in Minolta's range of regular consumer grade lens but only with top graded G Lens.

DT: A Minolta technology which enables the lens to relay information read frm the lens to the body to the flash. In short, its built onto the lens and enables more precise exposure.

AS: Anti-shake. Proprietary Minolta technology that's the first in the world to integrate anti-shake motor onto the sensor chip directly in the body so that every single lens (original maker or 3rd-party manufacturers) are Anti-Shake by virtue.

The rest, wait for them to tell u.

i think this is "D".

DT lenses are those with smaller image circle, made for use with APS-C size digital sensors right?. e.g. 11-18 or 18-200

just wondering, if you compare side by side with the most similar lens of canon and KM, which one will be more expensive?

eg. comparing the canon'L' - KM'G'
and those with canon'USM' - KM'SSM'

Canon's cheapest L lens starts from approximately $1,250.
Minolta's cheapest G lens starts somewhere from $2.5K.

Either way, Gs, Ls & the Holy Trinity are beyond my reach. :bsmilie:
