S100 or S95 as UW camera?

I like to hear some opinion here on whether you will get S100 or S95 as your UW camera.

As Ikelite has confirmed the production of S100 housing, so both S100 and S95 are viable options.
Underwater Housing for Canon Digital Cameras

However, my thinking is that for any new model, it is usually over-priced, and the previous model will now be reduced making it value for money.

So, the question is if you will get S100 for better feature? (would appreciate if you can state the feature)
Or, get the older model because it's more value for money.

Personally, the attraction of S100 for me is 1080p video and video autofocus.
If S95 has the video features, I would not have consider S100 for the price.

Your thoughts?

Thanks.

Well... you have already hit the nail by the head.... if 1080p video with a 24mm wide lens is what you want, then S100 is the only choice here. Of course... it will be more $$$ with any new model camera... so, be prepare to pay alot more for the 1080p video and the 24mm wide lens.

yeah, you are right.

guess the best way for me is to "wait" till right before my next dive to get the camera and hopefully by then, there is a price reduce (but unlikely :embrass:)

anyway, will still have to wait for the casing to be available in SG. ;p

I am wondering if anyone knows is it possible to house the S100 into the WP-DC38 (for 95) instead. Both cameras seem very identical.

Most likely.... NO.

While both camera 'might' look similar... the buttons are placed in difference position.

i think diver-hloc is right.

if you refer to this
Canon Powershot S100 Preview: 1. Introduction: Digital Photography Review
where they have picture of s95 and s100 side by side
you can see the button are almost similar, but with 1 important difference.
the edge to dial and dial to shutter button distance is different.
this will mean positioning will be an issue to the housing.

i might be wrong, especially if the picture are not to scale.

so, it's likely no.
but, if you already have a s95 housing, no harm bringing to the shop to try it out. :)

Personally speaking...

If you are not in any hurry, wait till the review for S100 is out before you decide. Also... upgrader would be selling their S95 setup much cheaper then.

From personal experience I decided to go for a dedicated underwater cam... after considering the following:

1. lighting is very unusual underwater and needs the relevant software for it
2. additional case is just going to make pictures less clear if its plastic
3. redundancy - rather have two cams on a major holiday rather than one cam and one case!

I used the sony tx5 on a recent trip to hawaii and this is what I managed to capture.http://gallery.clubsnap.com/showphoto.php/photo/184929/title/hawaii-molokini-turtle/cat/500

...most compact waterproof sports cams shoot 1080p, and most still need post-processing for the final 'pop'.

What or which is a dedicated underwater camera?

Just saw this post
Canon PowerShot S100 slated for 8 December release by VR-Zone.com

Sounds crazy to me that it is retailing at SGD 920.

SX40 RRP is only SGD 749.
Thus, can't imagine I would be paying more than SGD 700 on street.
Anyway, just a few days more to know the exact retail price .... so hanging tight. :)

Yes, thanks, it certainly make sense to wait.
Moreover, the next dive is only next March, so would definitely wait for at least 3 months before deciding.

Right, so it make even more sense that it must have RAW, isn't it?

I normally suggest you to shoot RAW all of the time... might need abit more PS-ing before using, but its the best file type to use for U/W. :bsmilie:
