For most shots like this, try to get an even background, with as little distracting elements as possible,, something like #2 & #3.

For #4 you should have held the camera a bit lower, so more of the background would be peach, instead of half black half peach.

#3 & #4 are the same dragonfly on the same twig right?

The shots seem to be sharp on the important bits, the eyes.

great shots espacially the second one !

Hi Raymond,
wonderfull pic......I wonder how you managed your focus? the second 1 is really sharp! Can teach me?:)

Great captures Raymondb!

You may want to move the camera a bit to adjust your background, so it is less messy. Makes people pay more attention to your subject.

Thanks for all the kind words.

Compact7, I do not think I'm qualify enough to teach you. However, I have tried applying methods that have been mentioned everywhere: Simply just look, point, compose, hold your breath, press the trigger. I think areas with more contrast colors will obtain focus lock more accurately. Another thing I've been practising is to turn on the burst mode and shoot a few shot of the same object continously.

cerebrus, thanks again for your suggestion. Sometimes, to find a good background is a challenge itself to me, perhaps I'm not fast enough. :-)

Is the background of this shot closes to what you've suggested (too bad its wing is broken):
