If you 1 2 get the colour, brightness and contrast correct, as per print, you need to invest in the monitor callibrator loh. A few hundred bucks.....

Yah, of course my BW cannot compare with the Pro's, cos I am not a Pro.:bsmilie: I am a newbie still learning.

But to be fair to the channel mixing technic I have to say this, when you do channel mixing, then you can tell the diff from normal BW direct from the cam.

Contrast for BW is not always there unless there is really a luminance contrast in the real scene, if not, even if you use a SLR BW film also cannot get the contrast (ie. if you take a BW pic of a 2 pieces of paper with similar luminance , you won't get the contrast). That's why even bw SLR users need to use colour filter to get the required contrast on their film......

The "storm" pic didn't have much contrast is because even in colour, they are the same hue, so where to find much contrast? If you look at my changi airport recycle bin pic, the three bins are in 3 diff colour actually. I manage to get the 3 tones of the 3 bins in such contrast with channel mixing (can mix in RBG mode, same principle as using colour filter on BW SLR). If you use BW mode on your cam, you will probably get the 1st and 3rd bins will the same tone. It was after this trial then I told David that channel mixing is really good.....:D Still learning.....learning......and will share here for those interested of my experience.:)

Any experience to share on BW?

i usually edit BW photos using brightness/contrast, levels and curve. that would increase the contrast in a monotone picture.

Are you using S3 IS? There is a fireworks mode if you are using S3 IS.

I'm using S2 instead. Haha.

But if in the first place the data is lost you can't get it back. For example for the bin pic again, if in BW cam mode you get same tone, then even if you adj the brightness/contrast, levels and curve, can cant change them much, as the file is telling the PS that they are the same (or very close) tone......:)

May be I am not good at it too, so my pic doesn't look Pro, like my bw cafe pic was the 1st I tried and it wasn't very good......but I think Pro will use channel mixing ba.....:dunno:

Hi, please check out this thread for the comparision between Desaturation and Channel Mixing methods for BW conversion.

Just hope to share my learning to all. Feel free to contribute of comment there.:)

nono.. i ment i edit the coloured version into BW using BW gradient, adjust the brightness/contrast and curve... I'll post some of my monotone pic here which i like it a lot:

Nice BW you have there. But the 2nd piece is not BW rite? May be I will try on the BW gradient.

guys, a question to ask hoh. If i wanna achieve rays of light from sun, bulbs or other light sources, what kind of setting should i set to?

hmm.. i think aperture is wider the better.. i'm not sure myself too. i think only when u can see the rays with naked eye, then only there is a possibility to be captured in the camera, if the rays are not visible, camera won't be able to capture it no matter what settings you are using.. just a thought..

oh, i thought he was asking about capturing the light rays from sun for example in the misty forest..

Yah, NightZ right, if you want sunburst effect, smaller aperture better. If sun ray thru a misty/foggy atmosphere, then doesn't matter....but for such scene, I believe you are taking a very wide pic, so probably use small aperture too, to have the deep DOF, so that the entire frame will be sharp...:)
