WOW!!! Nice pix, esp pic 3.  How did you achieve such consistent sharpness in low light condition, what were your settings, shot handheld?

I thought you have a 70-200mm IS, right?

Here are mine for sharing, shot at Bugis, Nikkor 80-200mm handheld. My arms were numbed after the shooting. :(

Use monopod with 70-200mm f2.8 non-IS as IS is useless for sport...using highest ISO as high as 1600~3200...as 1 D mk2 noise level is still acceptable...with no sharpening on cam...

Tx John, for Team 4, Bishan Stadium, any idea what is the start and end time and where do we meet?

meet outside the stadium at 7.10pm sharp.

The match normally start at 7.30pm and end around 9.15pm...

Actually, the horizons don't bother me that much. It's better to shoot level obviously because if you shoot tight, having to crop afterwards to correct the tilt could mean that you lose a hand or a foot even though you got everything into the frame at the first time of asking. However it's a simple 20s job to correct on the fly in PS, so I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I'd be more worried about the fact that, aside from the fact that they're sharp and well exposed (credit to both the photographer as well as the camera gear), the shots don't really have much to sell them.

The first one lacks action - it simply is too static and doesn't capture either player in decent action. The second one lacks because the ball is too far away from the players' heads - you need to sort the timing out to get the ball closer; and unfortunately this is not something your camera will solve for you. At 8fps you'll still get ball away from head before contact, and then in the next frame the ball away from head after contact, without quite getting the ball very close either side of contact. The third one is a nice shot, except it's side on and his face isn't even side on, which means that its value as a sports picture diminishes.

For a 1st attempt I suppose its fair enough, but aim to get at least one picture that you can truly be proud of. Keep plugging away at it - you've spent a lot of money on the (right) equipment and with a bit of patience and persistence you'll start getting the hang of it and getting some decent images.

thanks, but i guess it's a so-so shot, actually. shot this with a fellow CS'er at SAJC for the A Div soccer last year, for "personal entertainment/fulfilment" purposes only. My friend had the same shot, just that he got a slightly different angle because he was a couple of meters away.

one of the FAS official photographers taught me this - doesn't matter if it's a 1fps, 3fps or 8fps camera - all you need is that ONE frame to make it. of course, having better equipment doesn't hurt, you know ;)

Heh. Jed's away from home for a week in London shooting the tennis at the Stella Artois. Today Jed had his laptop nicked from a room full of about 30 laptops. From an area that is relatively secure cause people need to be wearing passes. The guy strolled in when most of us were out shooting, sat down and talked on a mobile for 5 minutes, and calmly packed my laptop up, grabbed the cable, case, and strolled out the room. The other two people in the room didn't think anything of it at the time.

So basically, at the minute Jed is without laptop 300 miles away from home, typing on the office Mac and trying to figure out the "old" TiBook that he'll have to use for the time being until the office sorts out a replacement PC based laptop under the insurance.

So Jed unfortunately doesn't have any pictures at the minute, aside from those on his card. At any rate I don't think there were too many football pictures on that laptop anyway cause the season ended a month ago and most of it would have already been transferred on to my desktop at home. Which, is 300 miles away...

Sorry, I had to have a rant. Thankfully I had a body and the four lying next to the laptop that didn't get nicked... that would REALLY have hacked me off.

ow! that hurts to know an insider pulled that off. :(

**** jed thats bad. If you need help on the Tibook let me know. Not too diff from my Albook, i've got a copy of CS2 that is trial for 30days if you need it. Will at least last you a while. Let me know and i'll send it to you.

It would have hurt yes except that I think the suggestion now is that it wasn't an insider, but that somehow this guy managed to get through the security. That it's not a fellow snapper is possibly just as well. Who knows...

Thanks for the offer. I'm sure I'll be fine as long as I don't need it for too long. Basic things I can manage, as long as I don't run into WiFi configuration issues and things like that. In terms of software, CS is loaded as is Fotostation so I can be off and running. I can't seem to find Fetch which is a problem but I'll speak to office guy when he gets in in the morning. Worst case I can email files out. I need to install an adaptor for my Cardbus CF reader too - will sort that out on the 'morrow.

Joy of joys. And then a week or two down the road, I'll start realising exactly what data (mainly pictures) I lost as a result of this...

So true, so true. It's always the that one frame. Most of the time, that one frame is also the first frame. Subsequent frames is just a "feel good to shoot so many frames" thing.
