RX1R II

Its a really expensive compact full frame...

Any reviews on the AF speed and accuracy? Pretty much as good as the A7R II? And hows the EVF?

I tried it at sony showroom @ 313.... I find it's ok only.... not very quick but it's not slow either.... my friend's Q af is faster by quite abit I feel...

The first and one of only 2 FF compacts in the World at the moment. The other being the Leica Q and that is S$1000 more expensive... :)
I was at the special preview organised by Sony and tried it out. The RX100 Mark III was awesome but this one blows that away with its sheer features. Low light performance is fantastic! Although the description is frowned by serious photographers, I would say for casual users, its 42MP allows you to "zoom" by cropping, so you don't miss the zoom! Of course artistic composing would not be the same as real zoom with the better bokeh. If I had the dough, I would consider replacing all my DSLR+ lenses+A6000+lenses for this...But the idea of spending $4999 for a single camera means no redundancy and if you drop it...oops.. :)

The build quality is amazing. Feels really solid as well. The "Made In Japan" tag probably contributed to the hefty price tag though.

I disagree on this. I went and had a close look with the camera yesterday at 313, and I am disappointed with aspects of it....especially at that price.

Parts of the camera are super solid, but the cheap plastic door is a huge letdown...I mean on a $ 5k camera...really?

My biggest concern is with the viewfinder...it is flimsy in comparison to the rx100 version. When extend theirs a significant amount of lateral play in it...it doesn't fill me with confidence that it will last continuous use...opening and closing.

I'm betting there's a raft of cases where people break this, or it wears out over time and it will cost some crazy amount of money to repair.

I was seriously considering this camera...now, I a little uncertain.

The body is the same as the rx1. If there are cases of them breaking, you would have heard them already.

When I tried the camera, the evf mechanism felt very solid to me, without any play. This is coming from a RX100M3 user.
Anything can happen to a showroom unit. Like the leica Q i tried at the raffles showroom is much stiffer than the Q i have received. A lot of enthusiats would have fiddle with the device the way none of us would.

I didn't say body...I said viewfinder and battery door....I've owned every rx100 model, and I use them daily for my work in the creative industries. Read the comment again...I expect a 5k camera to be robust...and for the evf when it's extended its structure is not as robust as the rx100 due to the spring loaded action now.

I don't want to baby my cameras, I want to use them daily. Will wait until we see another round of GAS victims who buy tech, shoot photos of cats or marina bay and then let it sit in their drybox for months

I agree with TheDrybox. I had both the RX100 Mark I and now a Mark III. Their EVF build quality is not anywhere as solid as the RX1RM2 that I tried. The additional lateral pull out means its even more flimsy and having to push it back in before retracting is a minus point. The chance of damaging it is higher especially since I use the EVF exclusively and it has to go in and out all the time. The RX1 EVF comes out solid with hardly any movement. It also retracts in one movement, a super plus for me. In my view, the viewfinder is a huge improvement over the RX100 series. I do hope that when I am ready to upgrade, the RX100 Mark V will have the same EVF design as the RX1. So its possible ranchorelaxo may have tried a badly abused demo set. I know that the flimsiness of the RX100 EVF varies between units too. :)

You must of had a very special custom RX100....since the built in EVF didn't appear since M3. So how....our business has 3xRX100M3 which we use for b-roll and stills under certain conditions....it's a proven performer. THE evf is not spring loaded with a lateral movement for retraction...it's simpler. do you actually have the rx1r mII and use it extensively??.... No, I didn't think so...

When I said body, I was refering to the battery door as well. Sorry if that wasn't clear.

I still found the evf structure very solid though tbh. Pop the eyecup in, there's no play. Felt fiddly at first, but is actually a very simple part.

I've tried both the Q and RX1r2 , if given a choice of 1 I'll definitely go for the Sony. The AF is noticeable faster than RX1/r , built in EVF and the retained compactness wins it for me.

Yes the Mark I does not have the EVF which is the reason I upgraded to the Mark III in the first place. Just wanted to share that I was an RX100 convert having moved from a Mark 1 (which in itself was an excellent unit too).

For my unit, the EVF pops up (its spring loaded) after pressing a lever and then you manually pull the optical box out. At max extension, it wobbles a lot and is not sturdy. That is my set anyway. After use, I need to push the optical box back in first and then push it back down against the spring to close it. This action becomes cumbersome when I need to power on and off the camera many times.

The RX1RM2's EVF pops and deploy in one motion. The demo unit I tried barely wobbles when i attempted to move it with my fingers. It's definitely more sturdy than my Mark III (The mark IV did improve on it when i tried it at the Sony store). Once done, you do one action to press the EVF back down and it retracts and goes in in one single action. Other people may have other opinions, but my own experience is that the RX1 is definitely better than the Mark III.

In anycase, choose whatever makes you happy. Everyone gets one that suit their needs. If he mark III meets all your requirements, there is really no need to upgrade. That is why I am giving it a miss. Some may want a hotshoe found in the mark II. I don't. I would prefer my Mark III has the same sturdy one-motion EVF system as the RX1RM2. That one meets my need. :)

I have people says that the lens is nof good enough for the sensor. Is there such a thing?

Yes, there is such a thing. Same way as you plug in an old lousy zoom lens to a high end camera sensor, you'll never be able to shoot a shot that is full 36/42/80megapixels sharpness. (I.e. 100% pixel to pixel sharpness) But pixel peeping on a camera of 36mp and higher is usually asking for trouble. (Hand vibration, technique, etc matters more)

From my tests, the RX1R2 glass is a good match for the 42mp sensor. Its not a "Sigma ART" level sharpness, but its half the weight of an ART lens !

You can check out a full-resolution shot I took here, click on the image to go flickr, and download full resolution image (7952x5304), you can even read the serial numbers off the canon lens. This was shot at f/2 and the focal plane is not aligned to the objects in front perfectly. But you can get an idea of a normal shot.

I was told that the rx1r2 is upgraded to 43MP but the lens is still the same. Sigma ART not that great. I prefer zeiss. ?

I can attest to the quality of the lens. Used the RX1R with the 24mp sensor with great results. It may not be optimised for the newer 43mp sensor though.

Yes...I like the rx1r alot..if they would make it like the fuji x100t with tge hybrid vies finder,, it will be perfect

One of the selling points raised during the pre-launch presentation was that the lens was specially designed and optimised for the 42MP sensor to provide clean and sharp images. How that translate into real pictures leaves to be seen but the sample images blown to poster size was excellent.
