Saw that it's lens design, as well as focusing specifications.

Hmm, you still have a link to the patent document? I'll like to take a look at it :)

Yes, it's only for the 85/1.4.

Thanks huggable.

I'm no technical expert (that's where experts like Isisaxon comes in) but with my legal knowledge on patents, perhaps we can make some sense of it.

The widest scope of protection is found in Claim 1, which says:

1. An optical system comprising, in order from an object:a first lens group having positive refractive power; anda second lens group having positive refractive power;the second lens group being movable along an optical axis for varying focusing, andthe first lens group satisfying the following conditional expression:2.50<f1/f where f1 denotes a focal length of the first lens group, and f denotes a focal length of the optical system.

Not sure that I see any specifications relating to a 85/1.4; unless the technical specs above can only be used for that one lens and no other. The remaining claims are either dependent on CLaim 1 or are method claims for Claim 1.

Its also good to know that this patent does not appear to be registered in Singapore; from the patent family members in the USPTO, only covers Japan and in US.

It's basically constrained to the lens formula used by the 85/1.4. It is general in the sense that it constrains only the focal length ratio of the lens group. Basically, it protects the same formula from being scaled to any other focal length which can benefit from the formula, for example, it could be scaled to a 42mm for four-thirds.

It doesn't matter whether it's registered in Singapore because the biggest market is still US. If any lens maker wants to make a copy of the lens or a scaled version of the lens, it would be silly if they cannot sell in US. Japan because the major lens makers are Japanese.
