It's not specific to Nikon although more common. Canon using colleagues have the same problem as well. As to why it happens for some and not for others, it depends as well, upon how you use your camera (as in your grip method) and also, luck of the draw.
Nikon do literally use double sided tape to hold the rubber on, at least for some bits, and this works generally very well. At any rate, Nikon SG won't allow user-replacement, Nikon US will mail the parts for a nominal fee (like, under US$5 and shipping) and thereupon it's a 2 min fix, no fuss. And Nikon UK, bless their cotton socks, will ship the parts for absolutely nothing.
