Why do you need such a long lens?

For shooting the metal birds in flight. Like shooting anything that flies, you need genuinely loooong lens and quite a bit of cropping. ;) :)

Hey Tango3, WoW, that is a fabulous pic, dynamic, intensive and full of impact! How I wished I could get that kind of pic!

Thanks for the tip off :bsmilie:
Anyway i spoke to the base RSM incharge of the security for the air show. He mentioned tha checks this time will be strict for some recent cases of security threats. Here's how it goes.

1: u'll need to walk through a metal detector ( there will be a max amt of "metal" u can have on u before it triggers the beep)
2: u're required to place ur pocket items in a small basket before u walk through the detector.
3: in the event the machine beeps, u'll be manually searched with a hand held metal detector.
4: they have the right to ask u to open ur handbag and components but not rummage thru your things.
5: have the right to refuse entry.
6: all bags will need to pass thru the X-ray belt. ( which is not the typical ones used. they will stop the bag in the middle and make a decisive check)
7: gear bags will/may be asked to open for inspection.
8: during the show if u have a "suspicious" looking lens u might be asked to "follow them"

I next asked. what will happen if lets say someone used a TC on say a 400mm lens to make it 600 or any lenght more then 500mm. He said. " We don't want to be extremely unfriendly and refuse entry, but we will safe keep the object for them for the duration of the airshow and still allow entry, but in cases of un co operative attitudes, we will not allow them entry."

Hope this is good info for you guys. Security tests and checks have been going on recently to test the RPs and Mps. anyway the new choppers dun fly that high. seen them practising for the show lately. :)

Cheers.
Chris

Still the RSM don't seems to answer the question precisely. :dunno:

400mm on a 1.6 or 1.5 crop already more than 500mm.

300mm on a 2.0 crop is 600mm.

Do hope the RSM read this.

Great work guys. So the RSM is now educated about TC.

Don't ask questions that will force an answer that will not work to your advantage.

So back off from forcing an answer on the 400mm lens.

:mad2: :mad2: :mad2:
how stupid can someone be...

.

I do it on purpose mah. LOL

Why got any problem with that. :)

No problem, I'm very tolerant of genuinely stupid people, but less tolerant of people who try to act smart. Do you fall into the first category?

lol

should b no prob for me.goes thro one everyday.
FYI:If u r going down from office, wear running shoes.all leather shoes have 1 strip of metal in it which nearly 80% will set off the alarm.those like me enjoys wearing army boot, the detector will also go off.

So, this open house is in a week's time.

For those who do not want to get a free suntan, better get ready your sunblock and a jockey cap to standby. If you stay around like 2 hours or so, depending on how bright the sun is, garanteed to get suntan, if not sunburnt.

We are gonna to see some fantastic action by the Apache choppers!

i think the question about limiting focal length to 500mm is not so much about how far u could zoom. You can have a video cam with 800mm zoom too and it is very small in size. They are restricting to 500mm in my opinion is to set a standard for rather limiting the overall lens size and barrel diameter. Someone could disguise a bazooka or grenade launcher with a lens the size of 500mm and beyond but it would be quite difficult to simulate one with a small lens. So the standard set for 500mm is more a safe guard more so than how far u could zoom in.
