skyflash: Right! I see the blue inert labels! =)

OK to add more:
B = Bomber
F = fighter
C = cargo
H = helicopter
A = attack
E = electronic
K = tanker
R = Reconnaissance
U = Utility
X = Experimental

Eg: UH-1H (Utility Helicopter)
F-16, F-5 = fighters
RF-5 = reconnaissance fighter
X-29 = experimental
A-4S = attack fixed wing
AH-64D Apache = attack helicopter
C-130 = cargo plane
E-2C = eletronic aircraft
KC-135 = tanker cargo

More still to add:

M = Medical
V = V/STOL e.g. AV-8B = Harrier
Y = experimental also?

Forgot these:

O = Observation (OH58 Kiowa Warriors operating in tandem with Apaches)
T = Trainer (T-38)
S = supersonic? (SR71 Blackbird)

Strangely, the U2 spy plane weren't identified with R.

The other exception are some WWII planes like the P51 Mustang. What does P stands for?

Sorry for posting again in such a short time. Found a website that explains all this. Seems to be quite definitive. http://www.designation-systems.net/usmilav/aircraft.html

P = Propellor
SR= Strategic Reconn(i dunno how to spell!)

The U2 was called the U2 to fool whoever came across any mention of the aircraft before it was shot down over the Soviet Union. It was later designated the TR-1. TR stands for tactical recon.

Y is for designating a developmental aircraft.

mobiledeath: Wow a RSAF F-22A... if only... Yeah the babe refers to the barakeet, the hump back falcon. Which scale / brand are you building?

Hasegawa 1/48. Hase seems to be the only ones doing it. What's more the decals are made for this model.

Actually the website http://www.designation-systems.net/usmilav/ explains it all. It also deal with some of the non standard designation used (e.g. SR-71, F/A-18 etc). The current designation system was adopted since 1962, so WWII designations may not conform.

From the site:

P = Maritime Patrol (from 1924-1948 P = Pursuit)
Y = Prototype
X = Experimental
S = Anti-submarine

All these talks about the hardware seem to have distracted us all from realizing how well the photos were taken. Just look at the composition and you can see most of the photos were carefully and well thought of. Great job, Joho :thumbsup:
