From now on, I'm gonna blame everything on Bipolar Disorder.

guys, guys..

not everyone who has bipolar disorder (and it is a real problem, you have to remember that there are real people with it) does what ris low does..

you won't make fun of cancer, you won't make fun of h1n1.. just because some public figure is using it as an excuse for bad english (among other things).. let's exercise some sensitivity here, please. :)

SINGAPORE: Miss World Singapore winner Ris Low has confirmed that she has decided to back out of the finals in Johannesburg, South Africa in December.

Her decision comes after a slew of negative media reports. She was lambasted by the public for her poor English.

Later, news of her credit card conviction in May also surfaced which put her in the spotlight again.

Ms Low was sentenced to two years' probation for credit card fraud.

This threw up issues on whether she could or should represent the country.

When asked if she's finally bowing down to public pressure, the 19-year-old beauty queen said: "I feel that it would be better for everyone, including Singaporeans who are not very supportive of me going to this pageant.

“This is actually the best for everybody, including the company, the public and for myself. So yes, I have given it up because I think it's the best choice now."

While she didn't reveal when she came to the decision, Ms Low admitted that she's had thoughts of quitting for some time.

Miss Low said that ERM World, organiser of Miss Singapore World pageant, has been informed and supports her decision.

ERM said it will be interviewing a new representative to represent Singapore at Miss World 2009 in the coming days and will announce who she is shortly. - TODAY/938LIVE/vm

Err... I vote this for the 'Understatement' Of The Year Award.....

Did she withdraw on her own accord, or was told that she will be replaced at SA ? Was she stripped of her Title ?

I believe it was a forced resignation. ERM probably told her that they will kick her out; if she does not voluntarily resign. From her adamant stance taken over the last few days, I don't see any new developments which could made her change her mind.

I see. The ending as quite expected. Better to have an aeroengineering grad represent singapore than someone with questionable integrity and without any sign of changing for the better.

All these statements about " representing S'pore' makes me cringe big-time! Whoever really cares about this pageant contest anyway?;)

What about a certain current minister ( according to my friend n I'm trying to google it now....) who has a criminal record? What do u guys say to that? Should he be 'representing' our nation n I'm talking about more serious 'representation' .

You forgot :

Eh .. cannot ban me from CS leh .. bipolar disorder :bsmilie:

A few such sufferers have banned themselves here.

I think she has bowed to the intensed pressure from the posters in Kopitiam.

:bsmilie: :bsmilie:

It's inevitable-that's the best she can do for the time being. Maybe she will ask Mas Selamat on how to evade evryone now

I think so too. This post has more than 10k views. :bsmilie:

She can fly if people turn against her?

ERM is blaming public criticism and media for having to react the way they did. Not surprising though: if Ris Low had indeed informed ERM of her conviction and they'd indeed say it's OK as long as it's not made public, then they would had been the ones squarely in the spotlight instead. No idea what really happened, but my hunch is that ERM really didn't know.

Either way, are they referring to the video where Ris Low was interviewed, or the many spoofs done of her? I thought the original video was already telling enough of her problems with English, something that she admitted to herself. Now they're saying that she actually speaks very well. Who to believe?

"She has resigned. Story closed," a staff member of ERM World Marketing, holder of the Singapore franchise for the Miss World 2009 contest taking place in Johannesburg in December, told AFP.

sound pretty straight forward for this staff member. think some head should roll too in ERM! if this issue is bring to lights if Ris eventually went thru the contest, does anybody calculate the damage that will be bring upon us.. sending a fractured English speaking woman who is a credit card cheater with bipolar disorder ...

Seriously, do you think this is damage capable of calculation or quantification? Damage sufferred by whom and how much?

I think it is very very difficult to quantify damages, even if it is due to ERM. ANd I don't see how ERM's heads should roll since they owe no duty of care or legal obligations to ordinary Singaporeans.

The general perception that Engg school got no chio XMMs?

i really feel bad for her.
her english sucks, true, but ppl are being so prejudice but judging her from the way she speaks and one such incident.
we all make mistakes, she's young, probably not very mature, and i wouldn't blame her.
she probably doesn't deserve all this, when other girls of her age commit such errors, nobody slam them like that.
can't imagine the kind of mental torture she has been through for the past few months..

if it is true that she's forced to resign against her own will,
really screw those organizers.

wtf when we do all those whatever ribbon campaigns thingy when we can't even forgive a young girl whom commited a mistake when she's still young?
talk about being magnanimous singaporeans, tsk, my ass seriously.

Not making fun of the disease, but merely pointing out the lame bullsh*t used by ERM.
