The shop quoted a price. The buyer agreed to it. Was the buyer coerced into paying for it? No ... then you can't blame the shop as the buyer is at fault for not checking what is the market price. But woe to the shop for overcharging.

A 128CF goes for around $60. Charging $195 is 3x that figure. Imagine you order a drink at the coffee shop and the shop wants to charge you $4 for that. You think that's right?

What, so you are saying it's right for the shop owners to rip other people off?

Even reputable shop sometimes try to rip you off.

I went to this famous shop in peninsula plaza and asked Duncan how much was the cheapest 128CF. He quoted me $70 for a 128 CF. I said so expensive. He said Japanese Hagiwara would be more expensive.. Hah. He thought I blur king.... In my mind, I felt like telling him to ...... I have a quotation from another shop that quoted Hagiwara 128 CF for $50... If he quoted me close to that, I would not have bother abt the slight difference. I was disappointed.... :(

Unbelievable reasoning. Not every consumer out there is aware of the market price. Some are even impulse buyers. Not knowing the market price does not justify any attempt to charge the buyer more than the market price, or at the most, the Recommended Retail Price.

If the price difference is 20-30%, I would say the buyer should have checked around first. But charging 3x the price is clearly an attempt to cheat the buyer. Such shops are unscrupulous. They'll will cheat anyone young and old. I had been a victim when I was in my early teens. This bloody shop at S L Sq is still around today and that was more than 15 years ago! Can't imagine how many people they rip off to survive for so long. And I still remember that arsehole's face. :bsmilie:

Perhaps $195 was the recommeneded retail price.... 3 years ago?

I have very bad experience from this shop that I will never never buy a single thing and told all who I know.

Not to convince people just cannot hold it when I saw this thread abt this shop. Called it a victim toll.

This is exactly the shop that I had a bad experience with - just beside Cathay Photo. Sometimes, I wonder how these shops survive - since its "once bitten twice shy"

I disagree, this example is sheer dishonesty. If you are right, STB wont bother black listing shops.

Agree. Why waste saliva here arguing on this. Let the thread starter just send in the receipt and letter to STB, and let's see how the board reacts.
Since posting on this board might "caused some defamation issues", as implied.

I think that's how things are in S'pore...it's become a culture for many years and we should just learn, be wary about this and accept it. The bottom line is, where buying electronic items are concerned, it's better to do some homework first.

I cringe whenever I hear of how much this country we live in is clean (becos we got fines to push people to behave and we make the poor cleaners suffer, thank you very much!), that we are a food paradise (come on, we know there are more delicious foods in Malaysia and Thailand and they are so much cheaper!) or that we have many great shopping centres here (all these countless cheating incidents are making me sick.)

Been to so many shops and can't say 1 stands out from the other. But there are certain shops (which I won't name here) which do honest dealings but their prices are not the cheapest around. You do get the assurance of good service and no rip off though. If you want cheap and reasonable prices all the time, I don't think any one shop can do that always. Even so, these are the shops that will see who the buyers are. If you are a greenhorn, sirens are flaring for them to quote higher prices.

These shops catered to overseas vistors who most often will not make the efforts to raise a complaint against any overcharging or misrepresentation. We all know how long CASE or the Tourism Board take to react to a complaint. These vistors simply could not or will not afford to extend their stay just to lodge their grievances, and hoping to get a refund or justice within their short stay in Sillyapore.

Haha... U must either be a former Singaporean who "siam" to Vancouver or someone who has heard so much about our culture.

i am not a former singaporean i am bruneian and now i am in ca for study. there is no use to "siam" as i know that's a singlish. i know more on your culture coz i study it and also i am smart to bargain enough for a p4 2mhz 1gb ram 15" combo drive notebook from a price of 39 hundred to 30 hundred so i think i am qualify to post the msg that i just post recently

Geez, I didn't know Bruneians were so snobbish. And btw, we don't use 'cleavers' to buy stuff unless we are really pissed. :bsmilie:

lol i accept the fact that majority of the bruneian are snobbish. for that reason i left brunei and go overseas for study and also in the minority i am one of them that is not a snobbish ones that you think off. btw its fun to chat with you why not you add me to your msn or yahoo so we can have a chat. ;)

hey....kiwitan!!!
the way you explain this thoery is very disgusting to me.
hope whatever things you buy(or your family buys), you'll be asked to pay 3x of the
retail price , then you better dun complain to anyone but read your
msg again...
the way you explain ...either you are the one in that shop or somehow
related to this shop.
