back on the af again.

yday when i had my unit was already night time so the af assist light comes on every now and then and the focus will literally 'move in and out' before acquring everyshot.

now its day time, the af is much faster, but there will be a noticable 1/2 second 'jerk' before you acquire the target.

much faster in day time...lol

sounds like AF speed is like EP-1

May I ask: does the lack of Image Stablisation have any effect on the 50mm A12?

wah sek! look at the wireless unit for GXR. damn power!!!

There is some serious stealth potential in this camera!

after the most searching analysis, I have decided not to buy this camera.

the main reason is that there is no 35mm APS-C available. I need a 35mm for my type of street photography. The 50mm is actually a macro lens.

The s10 zoom range covers 35mm, but (i) the s10 is CCD small sensor; and (ii) I already have GRDIII 35mm. To me, GRDIII is better than GXR + s10.

so far, neither m4/3 nor GXR have tempted me to abandon my GRDIII.

Next stop is X1. I am very interested to try it.

Tried the GXR with both units today and I must say although the IQ on A12 is superb, the AF speed (even after turning off macro) is very slow. It is not even comparable to EP-1. I also observed this strange behaviour when mounting the A12 in which, while still focusing, the LCD "blacked-out" for an instant and suddenly showed subject in focus :dunno:

So far, based on what I read, it seems AF is slow. but dunno exactly how slow until tests are performed.

From samples, it is clear the A12 is fantastic portrait camera and gives powerful creamy bokeh

Image below shows portrait and bokeh goodness

love his blog. very detailed analysis of the gxr here > http://wouter28mm.wordpress.com/2009/12/17/making-light/. i really hope that ricoh can address this slow af problem through firmware.

If m43 is not good even for you, I guess you would have to skip the X1 too.
According to dpreview's indepth review of the X1,

'In every aspect of operation it's just that bit slower than the likes of the GF1 or indeed the Olympus E-P1/E-P2, although it is at least faster than the Sigma DP2',

'Unrefined JPEG image quality',

'Electronic image stabilization of limited usefulness (only works in JPEG mode)'

'Playback mode slow and unresponsive'

Well, at least it comes with a free copy of Adobe Lightroom... but for the asking price of US$2,000, I think Leica should throw in a copy of Photoshop as well. :dunno:

useful wouter link! am really struggling to use the GXR effectively as the 'snap shots' are totally new to me and haven't been a manual focus for a long time. but wouter has some interesting setup and I can't wait to go home and try his b&w setting.

anyways...iso1600 is really usable which makes me happy =)

some random test to share :)

This is my setting for snaps,
Aperture F4
Snap focus distance 5 meters.
Focus setting Snap only.
Focal length 28mm
But thats on the smaller sensor as i use GRDIII

With this settings and enough lighting. It means anything between 3meters to infinity is infocus.

yes i am a GRDIII user too. I am very happy with it, much better than LX3, G11, S90

Just got my GXR a few days ago. Here are some shots that I took this morning. The first one is taken with A12 and the second with S10:

I am getting to like the s10 more and more...you just point and ...SHOOT!

I haven't touched my A12 for 2days liao...and with all these heavy duty lowlight festive shooting...I simply just whip out my slr.

can't wait for a fast prime man...a fast real 35mm will be *slurp!*
