Ricoh GR Digital users fall in!

anyone knows what's the flash power when shooting in M mode? i think its 1/1.....

Also i realised before i updated firmware to v2 n above, i was able to fire off the flash when in M mode and flash set to Auto... but not able now... the flash has to be ON...

Is there somewhere we can give feedbacks and hope they include in the next firmware update?
there's a few things i would love to have
1. manual flash power control, 1/1, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8
2. manual focus with distance indicated not just icons.... 0.1m 0.3 0.5m 1m 2m...
3. display mode, instead of a total black sceen, have one that just shows the settings n not the live feedback

too much to ask for??

------------------------
update:
Now i realise that the flash kinds of need some focusing distance to control its power when using it on Manual mode and with the flash on 'ON'. The AF-illum needs to be on too when using in almost total darkness.

Also in the M mode, with focusing to 'Snap' it'll just fire full power..

Now i've permantly stick on asome lens cleaning paper(the one i got is about as translucent as a single ply tissue) on it as a 'quick' fix. Closes quite nicely too..
For shooting f2.4-2.8 subject about 1-1.5m away, i need 16layers of the cleaning paper...

Well if anyone else has an idea, please do share :)

BTW dos-chin(his phts somewhat pushed me over to the GRD side when i was still on the fence) of flickr, has some really nice phts taken with his ricoh....

Hey congrads on getting your GRD!!! 1st hand? did you manged to sell your 50 f1.8?

keke... that's one reason why i didn't get the OVF and 21mm lens... i just carry my grd n a sb800 in a small domke belt bag... keke.. n ocassionaly the sc-29...

cheers :)

Well i keep the 50mm for myself. The 21mm is quite useful. GRD with sb800 ? Small camera, big flash, and i not quite use flash :) I bought it second hand from a CSer,save money to buy the accessories.:)

Anyone want to do a full user review about this cam before the GRD2 come ? Quite hard to find full review for this cam on the net.

Hey and i wonder how u guy use filter ? Is there any 37mm uv filter ? For CPL for IR u guys use step up ring ,how much they sell step up ring in Singapore ? :)

dpreview has full review of GRD for quite a while already....

and reidreviews.com also has one, if you are subscribed.

hi hi,sorry,i mean user review, not those technically or whatsoever, nevermind, pass it,just a thought running through.

from nacoki of flickr

Recent some flickr ask me about the trick on GR-D
so I would like to share some of my experience on using this.

the basic setting of my GR-D
+ customize image setting 1
- highest contrast
- highest sharpness
- highest color depth ( i think this also relate to the saturation of the photo )

many people ask about the post-production,
actually i m quite lazy on this, n i m not good at photoshop
so, all of my photo are using iPhoto 6 to manage.
as the setting in the GR-D are already enough,
so i will only increase the CONTRAST on some of the photo,
to make the subject matter much sharp.

the mode I always use:
+ P mode ( nearly all the time *daylight )
- AUTO iso ( range 64- 200) * over 200 will affect the color as i feel
- AUTO white balance ( actually always wrong )
- customize image setting 1
- MULTI AF ( favourable for MACRO )
- MULTI photometry ( easy to get some interesting light effect )

+ M mode ( when i want to have long exposure * night time/ low light intensity)
- same as P mode setting
- f 2.4
- duration (2 sec -15 sec) * above 15 sec, the GR-D loading like a fool :P

many people ask about the COLOR of my photo,
the main point isn't the post-production,
or the customize setting ( but i prefer using the maximum )
But what i think is the SHUTTER SPEED.
when you compare with two setting,
+ f2.4, 1 sec , iso AUTO ( assume to be 200 )
+ f2.4, 1/10 , iso 800
I can sure the one with 1 sec have better color result,
as it accumulate more light
instead of push up the iso.
GR-D is a strange machine,
the longer time exposure = vivid color.
e.g.

I found that when you using P mode,
the slowest shutter speed is 1 sec,
as it is quite enough for many situation
BUT you need to have a STEADY HAND ( maybe you can use triport )
actually many of my photo are shooting at 1 sec.

Beside of that,
my most favourite method is,
LONG EXPOSURE,
very easy to get a cool photo
e.g.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/nacoki/...t-720575940612...
http://www.flickr.com/photos/nacoki/...et-72057594061...
http://www.flickr.com/photos/nacoki/...et-72057594061...

another method to make the color much vivid is
using +1.0EV .
http://www.flickr.com/photos/nacoki/...et-72057594061...

a method not really recommend but i always do it ( afraid you'll break your cam )
SLOW SYNC FLASH + SHAKE
after it flash, but still have 1 sec to shake around
http://www.flickr.com/photos/nacoki/...et-72057594061...
http://www.flickr.com/photos/nacoki/...et-72057594061...

Last, the key element, the timing ( when you shoot )
i found that GR-D done pretty well or
maybe crazy on MAGIC HOUR ( sunset / sunrise)
many of my photo are taken at that timing,
so the color are quite saturate n' weird.
e.g.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/nacoki/...et-72057594061...
http://www.flickr.com/photos/nacoki/...et-72057594061...

Just forget one trick for GR-D
LIGHT PAINTING,
it is quite effective on GR-D as i have M mode,
use a torch to shine your object, you can get like this

Hope the above comments can help you those,
some of them may not the fact,
just my personal idea

Most of your link doesn't work.

Would love to see the example. :)

thanks lim8395 i'm checking out the site.

this nacoki guy in flickr really takes darn gd shots. and usually his settings are all at the highest.

i read ard the dpreview where some grd users find the iso1600 images more satisfactory with this:

contrast +2
sharpness: 0
saturation: -2

all personal preferences i guess...do play ard:)

any tips and tricks with the GRD do share
