[ Review ] - E5 - First Impressions

mmm help me understand. i got a 17mm m4/3. but it is still 34mm equivalent. If the 2x crop can be considered FF format in its own league, then can the 1.6x crop also be considered FF format in its own 1.6x crop league?

The 1.6x and 1.5x are crops because the sensors they used were designed much smaller instead of the size for which the lenses were designed.

Zuiko Digital lenses and the sensors in the camera were designed for the Four-Thirds system, not for 135 format. There is no crop factor, even though the 135 format equivalent size is different.

By conventional belief, you should say that medium format sensors are greater than full format because they're larger than 24x36mm. Therefore, they'd have a negative crop factor the way most people believe. A wide angle lens for medium format would suddenly be a slight telephoto on a supposed full format camera.

Only true for EF-S and DX lenses... because they are designed with the smaller sensor in mind...

Anyway, whether it's crop or multiplication factor... it's just a multiplier to get a 135 equivalent range... do we always have to be politically correct??? :dunno:

Large format is a format, medium format is oso a format, 135 is oso a format, 4/3 is oso another format.

The lens length no. Use with multiplier is only for convenience purpose.

You're right there... :)

Just want to let ppl understand wat is 4/3

Many ppl are confuse between aps-c and 4/3

I believe many brand release dx or efs lens mainly becuz since the sensor on the aps c body are smaller, y not have lens which are smaller and affordable

During film time, I dun think there is efs or dx

I must say 4/3 are on it own!

But in term of sensor size, yes, it is the smaller between all other format minus p&s

There were twin reflex film cameras shooting half frame. This means that you could have 72 frames on a normal 36 frame roll of film. Something like 4/3.

the old film PENs as well :bsmilie:

Exactly, but without a common frame size to compare to, you'll be comparing apples and oranges (at least in terms of focal length)...

Hence the crop/multiplication factor... :)

To add, since there were only legacy 135mm lenses and APS-C sensors during the beginning of the DSLR era, hence the term 'crop' factor...

4/3s was a system done up from scratch, and hence the lenses were designed for the 4/3 sensor...

Anyway, that was history...

To be honest, whether you call it 'crop' factor or 'multiplication' factor... I really don't care... as long as what is implied (i.e. 135-equivalent focal length range) is understood... :dunno:

was hoping for a small 4/3 body like the eXxx line... but the Oly interview said this was the last 4/3 body?

That was rumors and then later some news got wrong due to translation problem, they will continue to do E system bodies for the flagship, but most likely not the entry level (no one knows yet) until the PENs have successfully caught up and or surpass the traditional DSLRs

Hey, anyone using the copyright function in the E-5? I read from the official site that it is possible to tag owner information in the EXIF.... It's something new to me (not sure about other brands), although at my level I don't see the need for it, but I guess it is a useful function for some.

Still thinking of whether to get my myself an early Christmas present....

Hopefully, it will be better than that ugly "OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA" I've been seeing for years in the caption, as long as you can load it from the computer in mixed case.

"Olympus Digital Camera" is actually the image title in the EXIF file.

You can put more than copyright information. I know Nikon D700 has similar feature.

Not sure about others.
