Retrofitting Rolleiflex, Rolleicord with Mamiya RB67 focusing screen

Just got back my Rolleiflex 2.8D retrofit with a Mamiya RB67 split prism focusing screen by DE consultant (Philip Tay). Now I can focusing in dim light, as low as EV3 without much problem.

It was done together with CLA of the camera. As usual, a good job done by him.

Good news, he has about 8 spare Mamiya RB67 split prism focusing screen, so anyone whom long for this change, please act fast!

I DIY-ed the mamiya screen and installed it on my rolleiflex TLR successfully (quite ). While it is quite easy to focus with the split image, I found the vignetting quite bad.

OTOH, for a fraction of the $250-brightscreen, I shouldn't complain.

Just chat with Philip earlier on, I don't see any vignetting on my 2.8D. He suspects that either the screen is mounted upside down or that the screen is not position in the center when the excess is being cut off.

You might want to give him a call and seek some further advice.

There is vignetting while viewing (not on the negative of course) on the Mamiya, Beattie, Maxwell screens with highest degree on the Mamiya. Aggravated in dim light. Still acceptable on the Mamiya, though, but when bad, have to focus using center (or near center) and move back. Well, beats the original Rollei screen anyway.

Well, I guess it takes time to get use to it. It's like trying to focus on the side of a ground glass with a hot spot in the center on a large format setup. So, comparing to that, I am fine with the Mamiya screen.

But you are right, with the micro-prism, focusing is indeed easier than the original Rolleiflex screen.

Don't get us wrong, we did recommend the Mamiya screen in an earlier thread, for the price, it's a good upgrade. Of course, the Beattie and Maxwell are brighter, but costlier. I actually like the way the Mamiya snaps into focus compared to the Beattie.

Regarding original Rollei screen, all those that passed through me had a split microprism. The only issue was the screen was very dark, and actually ok in bright light.

As for vignetting of all 3 screens mentioned, it is really related to the finder used. It is worst with a waist level finder and a Kiev prism finder. Vignetting is minimal with a Hasselblad prism finder attached (at least the PME45) and the original Rollei prism finder, and it is also easier to see the whole screen. plus it's not inverted .

Indeed the Mamiya screens are excellent. With the microprism and 45 Split finder you're confident of using wide open at 2.8. No more guessing using the Original Rollei screen which is dim and without split finder.

The Bill Maxwell and Beattie screens are just way too costly.
