this is the result after autolevels and little sharping in PS:

Nikon TC1.4

Kenko TC1.4

Colours on the nikon TC is more accurate and the sharpness over the kenko is there...
details lost is minimal with the nikon TC, but those planning to save can consider kenko... afterall, pretty decent pics for its price.

Forgot to mention:

built quality of the TC: nikon TC is very study, well constructed and feels very solid.
kenko TC feels more inferiorly constructed. the plastic is of lower quality and looks more fragile

but of course, it is the glass that is important.
kenko comes with a pouch to hold the TC.
Nikon tried to save some money here and did not provide any pouch. :thumbsd:

Really ? My Teleplus 1.4x works with my AF-S 70-300mm VR even at the long end. Does hunt a bit though..... :(

Kenko Teleplus

According to the website above, the 2.0x will AF with lenses having f/2.8 or bigger.... and the 1.4x will AF with lenses having f/4 or bigger....

kenko TC does WORK with AFS lens

:o Then it must be mine is having the problem. My Kenko 1.4x Teleplus pro doesn't work with my AFS 300 f/4. Not even hunting, auto focus won't start at all.

If you're heading to HK, that's one of the things you can get. Got mine for $180 despite the crappy exchange rate.

yeah...built is definitely a big diff, can TS also comment on AF speed between the two..?

TS....nice comparision

how abt shooting in at night?any problem with "hunting" ?;)

autofocus speed is pretty much the same if under very bright light, but kenko seems to hunt when not so bright...

ok, did an outdoor test on the nikon TC1.4 today.... and after viewing the photos that are taken with the nikon TC, one word sums it all: SUPERB!!!!

i never imagined that this kind of high pic quality output can be achieved with a TC.
all this while, using kenko TC and very disappointed with the results, in terms of colour reproduction, sharpness and everything...
but the view was totally changed after today (with the nikon TC)

an example of the power of the Nikon TC1.4:

in an earlier post, i mentioned that those on budget and really need the use of a TC can get the kenko as the pics are pretty decent...

but after using the Nikon TC1.4 today, my opinion is that those who want to use a TC should seriously consider getting the Nikon TC1.4
the pic quality and output is really different in the real world shoot.
Kenko TC really cannot compare to nikon TC in real world shooting... (at least this is what i felt)

i can't explain it, but when i tested the nikon TC1.4 at home with the kenko TC on a soft toy, i found that nikon TC is better than kenko, but not by so very much that would make one spluge so much more money $$$ on the nikon TC. I started to doubt if my purchase was right.....
note the nikon TC is MORE than DOUBLE the price of the kenko... is it worth it?
when i went to bed last night, i was not too convinced myself...
no doubt it is better, but is it worth more than double the price ???

after i returned today, and have viewed the pics taken with the Nikon TC, i knew immediately why Nikon dared to charge customers more than double what kenko is charging.... it is not the brand...
it is the quality of the glass...
i don't know what kenko and nikon used for the glasses... but the superior pics output from the nikon TC can be seen by anyone...
i now know that i will start to pick up and use TC again...
so, those thinking of purchasing TC, pls do some homework.... i might be wrong, i might be right...
but if you ask me, i would say: skip kenko, go for the nikon TC....
(no offense to kenko owners here... maybe the kenko i had was a lemon)

:)

Just O/T a bit, anyone has a comparison of TC1.7 on nikon and kenko?:dunno:

Nice photos indeed. Too bad Nikon TC doesn't work with all the Nikon lenses and are mainly with the Nikon primes only. :o

have not extensively tested the TC1.7, but did a test at a shop about 1 to 2 years back and do not remember being impressed with the output... that's the reason i did not purchase the TC that time, but after using the TC1.4, i am having second thoughts about the TC1.7

for those who have the 70-200mm and the 70-300mm, my personal opinion is that the 70-300mm just do not match the 70-200mm coupled with the TC1.4 in terms of pic quality, although you get additional 20mm on the tele end. :)

nice shots eric

P.S-the Kenko 2X TC doesn't work with my Sigma HSM 70-200 (oldest version)

thanks for you kind words... :)
maybe nikon TC will work with your sigma 70-200 ??

I beg a difference on that. :)

Nikon TC will only work with AF-S or AF-I lens except 105mm VR. Also in the brochures, it stated that autofocusing is possible for maximum aperture of F4 or larger.

However, the image quality also largely depends on the type of lens you used. If you compared the 70-300 with the 70-200 with 1.4TC, the 70-200 with 1.4TC definitely win as the 70-200 is one of the best lens in nikon line up, the comparison is not fair for the 70-300 which cost only like half the price of the 70-200.

For users who use other third party lens, we do not have a choice but to stick to third party TC like kenko. However, you can get pretty decent photos when you stop down your aperture to F8-F11 when you use your lens with the kenko 1.4 TC

Just my personal comparison. :)

Very well said.

It is the understanding of the tools you are using.

agreed with what is mentioned about kenko TC.... i do have one too, but most shots i used for are wildlife and it is pretty difficult to shoot at about f8-f11,
mostly have to shoot at f4 to f5.6 to get the fast shutter speed (ISO sometimes already pumped up).
at about f4 to f5.6, that's where i felt the nikon TC was able to give better pics compared to the kenko TC at the same aperature using the same lens....

nothing against kenko though... just my experience with my kenko and nikon TC...
YMMV.... :)
