Repair/Service: Leica Camera Asia Pacific?

I was thinking of sending in my Leica MP for a service. Don't really feel like sending to DAG etc....

Is the new Leica Camera Asia Pacific any good? Anybody has any experience with them?

Or are they still like Schmidt, sending everything back to Solms, charge me an arm and a leg, and take 3 or more months?

What sort of issues are you having?

Film advance a little rough, just a little, but it irks me. And the shutter occasionally don't release if I half-depress for too long.

Probably cheaper to just do a CLA in Singapore. Really. They'd charge you for shipping etc.

So there is still no local work done by Leica Camera Asia Pacific?

Previously, Schmidt just have a glance, do the paperwork and then send to Solms even without opening it up. More like a post office. I guess it's the same for the new agent then... *sigh*

Go Master Tay lor. I prefer to talk directly to the person who is performing the repair.

Yes, Mr. Tay is the only person I trust to do a good job, but he seems busy. I have another camera that is still with him after more than a month, so thinking of an alternative.

Don't know what Leica is thinking, setting up a luxurious shop front but still no local after-sales service? Thought things would be better after Schmidt...

To be honest. Leica styles itself as a luxury boutique nowadays. One shouldn't expect them to be cheap even if the servicing is local.

Learn to DIY lah.

After playing with them for so long. I ended up doing RF alignment myself, very easy to do.

Got to take them out and use if not the grease will harden up and cause shutter jam or roughness .

kekeke, conduct a class to demo how to do RF alignment??

Wouldn't advice to DIY, mr Tay at De Camera Consultant is the most reliable technician. He has done a great job on my gears.

Mr Tay is amazing, he can be slow at times but he is very good.

Now to compare Leica service now to when it was under Schmidt.

For compacts, service is performed locally if possible and turn around time is quite fast, this is also the case when it was with Schmidt. Not much difference.

For lenses, M bodies etc. Service is performed in Solms, Germany. Meaning you bring it in, describe the problem, they fill in a form and send it off. Sounds the same like Schmidt BUT with a huge difference. From my experience, turnaround time has improved tremendously. It used to take around 8 to 16 weeks with Schmidt and it now takes around half that. In fact, I have had some lenses that took over 6 months with Schmidt.

So in essence not alot has changed except that LCAP in Singapore is now linked directly with Solms in terms of networks and computers and you get faster turnaround time.

Some of the techs here locally can do pretty good job with Leica stuffs. I send mine to either Prime Camera or Chiif. Some of us go to Camera Hospital and Alex Photo too. Many alternatives.

I have some bad experience with some of the local techs. Don't trust any of them now. Except for Mr Tay of course, only local person I can trust to hand over my precious equipment to.

Thanks for all who had responded. I'll have to wait then, will be sending to Mr Tay after he is done with my other camera.
