Relating my extremely poor service received from Spectacle Hut

Hi all,

I recently made a pair of specs with Spectacle Hut, and I would like to express my total displeasure with the service and quality of their products.

I popped into SH on 15/01/07 to try out some frames, and was pleasantly served by 2 service staff (1 female sales staff, and a male optometrist)

I was pleasantly surprised by the male optometrist in particular - he was pleasant, had strong product knowledge of the various product offerings (i.e. lenses) available, and was patient in allowing me to try on many frames. There was a particular pair that I was interested in, but I had decided to look around before committing.

Before leaving, I had requested for a quote ($240 for the frame with Essilor's Airwear polycarbonate lenses with Crizal coating, $300 with Nikon 1.67 Aspherical) - and he had not ruled out the possibility of a further discount (as my sis had already made a pair of permanent contacts at $330.)

2 days later, I chanced by the Bukit Batok branch (to see if they had a wider range of frames), and I had chanced upon the same frame again. I was given a brief quote (with Essilor Airwear) at $260 - still a reasonable price, albeit the small difference.

Being wowed over by the service at the Clementi branch, I decided to patronize that branch (even though it was out of the way for me). But however, the subsequent service that I had received was something that was definitely not desired.

-----

I went back to the Clementi branch on 19/01/07, and realised that the male optometrist was not in. Instead, I was served by the optometrist on duty that day (a female). I shall not delve into writing an detailed representation on what transpired, but I will summarize the incident in point form (for your reading convenience):

I proceeded to look at the same series of frames, and sought for a quotation for the same frame with Nikon's 1.67 Aspherical, and she quoted me $240 for the lenses alone. Reasonable price.

I subsequently requested for a quote for Essilor's Airwear with Crizal, and she gave me the shockingly high quote of $400+ for the lenses alone. When told about the previous quote received ($240), she mentioned that it was impossible. Attempted to call the previous male optometrist who quoted me. Further clarification revealed that she had quoted me for Zeiss 1.67 lenses.

When questioned further, she mentioned that Zeiss was under the same parent company as Essilor, which almost knocked my socks off. :bsmilie: Online sites from here and here show that they have totally different distributors.

However, this does not discount the fact that I had specifically requested for Airwear with Crizal, not Zeiss. It was then found out that she thought I had wanted an 1.67 index lens (in which she recommended Zeiss to me) - as Airwear was only 1.6 in index. I egged her for a further discount, and she quoted $220. Agreed, and tried the lenses.

She persuaded me to get the Nikon lenses, as they were thinner (1.67) and sharper. However, she did not mention that Nikon's lenses had no impact resistance/fingerprint smudge protection until I asked her (I got to know this from the male optometrist @ Clementi and also at the Bukit Batok branch). She proceeded to "brush" it off, saying that it was OK provided that proper care was taken - but she had failed to inform me about this till I had asked.

She further persuaded me to get the Nikon, as it had UV400 protection, but she did not realise that the Essilor Airwear had UV protection as well (I informed her about this, as I was a satisfied user of Airwear previously. Product specs from here confirms this). In embarrassment, she had proceeded to check the catalogues on this, but gave no reply. I further confirmed the Essilor choice.

When it came to price, she gave me a confirmation quote of $280. I was shocked - she told me that the $220 previously agreed on was for the lenses alone, and that the total package was $280.

I was infuriated. I told her that I was quoted $240 with the lenses and frame together, and I had told her point blank that if not for the previously quoted price, I would not have come back. Asked her as to when the male optometrist would be back on duty at this branch.
She proceeded to call that guy again, and this time, she agreed at the price of $240 (with no further discount).

Felt exhausted, and agreed on the price (to prevent any further agony - on hindsight, I should have declined the offer and made it at another branch.). As far as she tried not to show it, the subsequent experience after that was rather negative.

Of top of trying to extort me, I can't believe that optometrist has such poor product information. I know that Essilor is in charge of Nikon's eyewear division, but Essilor and Zeiss? That's totally unbelievable.

--------------------------------------------
I collected my spectacles today, and at instance, I felt that the spectacles were a little ill-fitting, but however, I felt that I needed time to adjust to the new spectacles. I also felt that the glasses were slanted, but I thought it was due to improper wearing.

However, later during the night, I started to have a mild headache while wearing them, and when I reached home, I proceed to examine the glasses in greater detail.

To my greatest horror, the quality of the eyewear was absolutely unacceptable! I have attached photos of the spectacles as evidence.

1) Although it was a rimless spectacles, the frame was absolutely flimsy, and the frame itself was not symmetrical.

2) Due to the flimsy frame, one of the lens was slanted.

3) To my utmost disgust, I realised that the mounting holes were not symmetrical and aligned!

4) Furthermore, the left-sided frame was not properly moulded, and was curved.

Never have I received such lousy customer and product service from an optician shop, and honestly speaking, I don't think I will ever step into SH again. It may not be an extremely expensive pair of spectacles, but at least give me a standard and reasonable service (not to mention a decent product).

On another note, can anyone recommend me a decent optician? Thanks.

If you're in the East side,

try Jamco at the basement of Katong Shopping Centre. Definitely gives it a  for the service there.

Wah, Jamco still around? I used to make my specs there when I was in primary school! That was, erm, many many years ago.

Yup, still there... I still go there to make my glasses. ;)

I didn't realise until this thread that a pair of specs can be so technical, I never had to wear glasses until recently... reading glasses :)

I had asked my children and they did confirm that if misalligned it will affect vision though not much, but since it would affect vision it is only right the shop correct it. Knowing this now, I'll tell my kids to not pay depoist if possible when they make new glasses, if have to pay deposit pay minimum.

Always go to shop that you trust and yes it does make a difference. I have experience the same things before. Now I don't go to any others and also don't mind paying in full even if it amount to over 1k for a pair.

Wow.. such sub standard for a pair of 2-300 pair of glasses.

I am usually happy with the $50 specs i used to wear.

Now wearing a pair of Oakley square wire 2.0 with some $25 lens made by my friendly neighbour optical store. :)

Rant 1 side can liaoz.

No need to rant in EDMW & CS

Thanks, will give it a look when I am doing my next pair. :)

Actually, I didn't even look at this in detail until I started to develop a headache while wearing it.

Dennis, that's true. So far, my experience with optical shops is more like "hit or miss" - with the exception of one neighbourhood shop (but it's way far in Tampines).

jsbn > On hindsight, I should have posted in EDMW only, but I guess anger got into me, and hence the double post. Sorry about that.

I had also started this thread with the intention to ask on whether does "branded" lenses make a difference - ie, the difference between Nikon, Zeiss and Essilor.

Frankly speaking, I think prescription eyewear seems to be way overpriced - apart from the customization of lenses (focal point, power, astig, etc) - prescription lenses alone can cost as much as a mid consumer SLR lenses (not to mention that SLR lenses have so much elements and mechanical parts).

Wah, your rant very long, so I just zoom in on this note:

Where is spectacle hut?
Frankly, never heard of it.

Want good opti?

CC Chui. Orchard Towers.

Edward J Benjamin.
at Philip D Izaac at Paragon

B S Moey Chong - Funan

All 3 are not cheap, especially the one in paragon.
But they all got faithful regular customers.

Forget some of the jokers in flashy-Optical-Shop-franchise-branches that advertise heavily.

The young opticians working there are employees of the branch and sometimes work under big talking yah-yah "sales managers" who know nothing about optometry.

I ever talked to one in such a flashy optical shop in Suntec City and felt like puking afterwards.

So these employees are also frustrated. And pressured to recommend hugely expensive things to customers.

I go to CC Chui - lau cher how since more than 20 to 30 years ago.
When checking my eyesight, he gives me the impression of one who really knows his stuff from decades of daily practice, and not just from the book knowledge.

hmmm ... reminds me of my unpleasant experience with SH too few years back, Yishun branch (duuno if it's still there.) , and never went back again.

Similarly, the guy who served me on my 1st visit was pleasant. I ordered a pair of specs and a pair of permanant contact lens from them.

But subsequent experiences were nasty. when i 1st wore the contact lens, I felt extreme discomfort. Thinking that maybe i was not used to it, i continued wearing it for the day. But it got so uncomfortable that my eyes started tearing and hurts. So I went to another nearest optician and he had a checked on my contact lens. he showed me an enlarged pic of the lens and pointed out that the lens had jagged edges (won't be able to notice without enlarged pic inspection) and as a result, my cornea was scratched and it took me more than 2 weeks to recover from painful (when ever i blink/tears) eye. ;(

Like snag, my pair of specs was poorly aligned and I felt giddy too wearing it. The 2nd optician also helped me ahd it checked. and he told me SH had given me lens of the wrong degree!

I went back to SH deemanding they change everything for me. :complain: however they refused to replace nor refund the contact lens, as they say it might be my own mishandling that causes the jagged edges? but how can it be, when I only rinse and wear immediately after opening the case?
then they also made some lame excuses on the mistake on the specs degree Although they reluctantly, changed the lens for me, i suspected they replaced it with a lousy quality lens, as the coating discoloured within weeks.

In the end I had to go back to the 2nd optician (a neighbourhood shop in AMK) to have everything made again. Good services, free after service checkups, free contact lens solutions, good workmanship. Neighbourhood shops sometimes still the best.

haha similar to you, i made a pair of permanent ones too at Yishun there, it was really hard to wear. i don't think its the edges, but it just didn't fit my eyes properly. too young to argue, went back once and they said i didn't get used to wearing them yet (was about 14 back then). so in the end couldn't wear it.. so.... 200+ down the drain.

You can get pretty good deals by ordering lenses over the internet (even after shipping is factored in). About half the price. You do need a prescription, though, which they require you to fax in.

I did some research on this. For contact lenses, you have to make sure the fit is correct. Besides the diopter (degree of the lens), you also have to specify the Base Curve and Diameter of the lens. Too small, and the lens will feel tight. Too great, and the lens will be loose.

Locally, however, asking around the various shops, I've found that they don't really take this into account. Very much a case of one-size-fits-all. Sad. And you pay twice the amount.

haha...now i always make my spec at 1 of the shop at chin swee road(manhattan hse)...cheap n gd...service is gd too...lots of ppl oso...haha...recently jus made a new spec for $70....

I can't agree more - today's optician shops don't seem to have a true understanding of optometry, all that they use are just some fancy measuring equipment (refractometers and all) to do all the work.

If only they are willing to provide the entire description of my prescription lenses..

woah, i didnt know specs lens got so much technicial specifications... hoho
really fingerprint smudge proof?

If its abt good service, you guys can try Paris Miki as well, the branch at Liang Court. Those guys know their stuff well and provide excellent customer service.

But be warned - prepared to pay.

oh my... my spec is from SH too...

While I must say that it's not totally fingerprint proof (actually, resistant should be the word), you can see a difference - the oil marks tend not to stick too much to the lens itself.

To all, thanks for the shop recommendations. Will consider them for my next pair.

"Of top of trying to extort me, I can't believe that optometrist has such poor product information. I know that Essilor is in charge of Nikon's eyewear division, but Essilor and Zeiss? That's totally unbelievable."
are u sure that she is an optometrist or jus an optician?? did u ask her?Optician can also test eyes lei.cannot anihow assume the person who test your eyes is the optometrist.u can go to www.hsa.gov.sg if u have the person name. there is a list of cotact lens practioner aka optometrist.cannot anihow assume tat the person is optometrist. further more... optometrist is also a profession.they r mostly well trained ppl unless u r served by an optician la.
AS for the misalignment, you should return to the shop and they will send the product back to Essilor to redo the lenses. MY previous rimless specatacles also has similar problem. it's very common problem cause my optician told me that it all hand made. It has got nothing to do with spectacle hut. even if u go to another shop, they will also send the glasses to be done by essilor if u request for airwear or nikon lenses. maybe you jus happen to bump to a less experience staff...tat's all... and perhaps the staff isnt detailed enough. I'm also a customer of spectacle hut, clementi actuali(but rimless not bought there)..their service is gd n prices r reali reasonable. i think u jus meet the wrong staff! And u can email to feedback@spectaclehut.com.sg if u wanna complain. it's seriously not v nice of u to complain here . i'm sure they willl change one pair of lenses for you cos its not their problem..it the person who fix the lens(which is Essilor)
