Yup, AB (Tim's brother) pointed this out to us also, couldn't see it initially until it moved. Its a really tiny file fish though.

I shot this at Redang 1st week of September.

What you have here are 2 Pygmy Filefish. Their names differ depending on which book you check. For my records, I call them that.

They were abundant in Redang about 2 seasons ago. Last season, they all seemed to vanish. Now they're back at certain dive sites.

  .... Man that is a wonderful shot...  well done mate.. i love the shot.. and i never knew of this species...

*frantically* searching through my books..... ;p

woah! something more for me to look out for! cool!

I've seen something similar in S'pore waters but I'm not sure if they're juveniles or that is their actual size. So cute!

Thanks for the compliments!

I've actually only encountered this species in Redang waters. There are other filefish/leatherjacket species that are rather similar but not identical this one. It's good to see that they're making a come back after last season's disappearance!

Wow, cool. Never saw this on my first trip to Redang. Yup saw the other type of filefish. This pygmy filefish is cool. Now can't wait to see my first pygmy seahorse.

Yup, I'm still waiting to see my first pygmy seahorse too.
Told myself that I must make a trip to Manado next year!

same as your coming DSLR on your 1st dive :D

You see lots of pygmys at man. But really hard to shoot them. Them moment you look way you loose them. Maybe will post a shot I took later. But they dot like the light after one or 2 shots they turn away.

i saw this at redang too, also pointed out by Tim. But I didnt take a pic of it. didnt even try, cos the whole group was leaving. Impressive shot!

Siaoon and I think that it may belong more to the leatherjackets. It is only about 1cm in length.. you really have to wait, before you can see them moving inside the soft tree corals.. now whenever i see soft tree corals, i would be stopping for a while, hoping to see them, haha..

Yes, some books name them as minute leatherjackets and not pygmy filefish. I'm not sure if the 2 species are different or just the common name.

They're small...hard to shoot...but really cute when they move around as a 'family'.
