Select the background layer, and then drag it onto the "new layer" icon. This extremely basic step is explained in almost all youtube and built-in tutorials.

Some other methods:
* Select the layer, right mouse click and choose, "Duplicate layer"
* You could also select the layer, go to the menu and under Layer|Duplicate Layer...
* Alt+L, D

Lots of ways...

Hi Gerald,

If you're looking at the link i noted, which i think you are, the stated instructions is pretty clear:

STEP 1
The first step is to duplicate the background layer by dragging it to
the new layer icon in the Layers palette or hitting (Ctrl/Cmd+J).

If you can't locate the "New layer" icon for some reasons, the shortcut key method should help you as well. No offense, but i think you might be still new to Photoshop, so do try to play around, explore or edit more.

I've another link here which might help: http://elitebydesign.com/how-to-master-photoshop-in-just-one-week/

I'm no pro myself, just my 5 cents.
