Im interested to get a Hi.matic F serviced too. i dunnoe if it is worth it as the rokkor lens looks foggy (fungus maybe). maybe someone can advise me on that?

Why not all the Yashica GSN users have a DIY gathering? We can share the tools and knowledge.

Hey Kiwi, if you can still get the batteries and the camera works, why not? I found RFs to be so convenient to bring around, and do not attract attention like a slr... i don't know why a dynax 5 + 50mm lens can attract attention and a oldie moldy like my gsn won't. well at least siginificantly lesser... most ppl ask why i'm still using such old camera....

Anyhow guys, about the trip to the service centre, i don't think i will go. Reason being today I acquired a working gtn today! At a price cheaper than the refurb by the shop. Only problem is foggy viewfinder, which I solved after 1/2 hr work.

A tip for the DIY ppl, if you have the small screws that are stuck, you can try to contract (is that the word? the opposite of expand) the screw by using 1)chewing gum remover, 2) freeze spray or 3) simply inverting and spraying a can of compressed air. I froze the screw liberally (ice formed on the camera...) and i was able to remove it.

HTHs, sorry to dissapoint csers...

Regards,
Alvin

u cleaned the viewfinder urself? Me wanna clean the viewfinder too... easy?

Yeah it's quite straightforward.... just make sure you got the correct tools.

Ok.... need any special tools? or else normal screwdriver and microfiber cloth can already?

Hi!
Yes, you may need a special tool for snap rings to remove the rewind lever and ISO lever (for the GSN).

These are the tools I use:

Best you bring the camera down to the hardware shop. I got snap ring tools but the one for cameras are very fine. Alternatively, you may simply want to use a bent paper clip.

Unfortunately I cannot get the gtn viewfinder to be as clear as the gsn.... this is obvious only at night though.

Ok...so pliers, microfibre cloth and the trusty paper clip can do liaoz for the minimalist?

Hi, I removed the top cover of my GSN with a screw driver, paper clips and wrench (contact surface padded with cardboard to prevent scratching the rewind knob). Now my viewfinder is clean and clear. :)

wooh... great man! Me got time will go try. Thanks guys!

sfhuang: What items did you clean up in your camera? I could only access and clean the front and rear glass pieces of my gtn. I left the 2 diagonal mirrors alone... wish it could be as clear as my gsn...

I cleaned the same items as you did, but I was lucky to have a relatively clear viewfinder. If your GTN's viewfinder is in bad shape and cleaning the glass pieces don't help, I guess you might want to consider sending it for servicing.

Thanks dude! I'll probably keep it for day usage.

How was the reconditioning? Any updates?

Hi mate! This thread is quite old, totally forgot about it liao! I believe we managed to clean up the RFs ourselves, so didn't go for any reconditioning services.

Alvin
