Recommended Travel Lens

wht is ur preference?
i can stick on uwa lens for travelling..coz i love landscape...
if u like landscape or the atmosphere..i think UWA lens is better.
or u might go to 15 85...since this lens is covered wide angle also..
15mm is wide enough for landscape....
its only bit of distortion issue for this lens...but u can correct it with DPP..
i brought my sigma 50 150 and canon 10 22 during travelling...but my tele lens normally sit on my bag....i only use 1 day once i went to perth for a week...and almost less than 1 day when i've been in Phuket...

its only my 2 cents opinion...all is up to your preference..

cheers

Hi all,

Newbie here. I just got my 500D with Kit lens (18-55mm) last month and came back from Korea last week.

you went to korea for a holiday trip?
didnt you use your 500D & kitlens?
if you used it, what was lacking while you were shooting with it?

if you're going to ask in a thread like this, people will recommend whats best for them. some recommended 18-200 coz they want longer rich. and some will recommend 10-22 coz they want wider rich. there's no right & wrong answer, its pure personal preference.

Bro, just to ask opinions, I am going to the KL Motor show this weekend, which lens would be preferable if I only intend to bring 1 lens?

Is Sigma 17-50 F2.8 more useful since most of the pictures might be wide angle to capture the cars and probably lighting is poor and F2.8 is useful as I dun intend to bring flashgun?

Or 18-200IS since I am also going for some shopping and tour around KL during the weekends?

for indoor event, you'll benefit more from 17-50 2.8 OS...

I feel that the longer reach probably is not there. The bokeh effect of portraits seems not clear enough using the kit-lens. I've seen the 500D user guide and seems that the 55-250mm lens seems to be quite good in taking portraits and also cheaper.

I used to walkabout with my 18-200 but now I walkabout with my Tokina 11-16/2.8. Have traveled with it to Hong Kong and China during cold seasons :).

How is the bokeh effect? clear? what about the wide angle effect? I was just thinking this could be the lens i need. :)

Hi, i think to get a nice bokeh effect need at least f/2.0, i use 50mm f/1.8 to achieve this.

Currently using 15-85mm lens, its wide-angle is good enough for me and fully extended can see as far as my eyes do. Good enough for a walk-about travel lens.

I got mine from DD at $942 (cash) then plus filter abt $40. Total $982.90
Still within budget of 1k.

I don't work for DD...just pre-empting some who will probably say i do.

Only hassle is you'll have to send it back to DD for repairs, not to Canon.
I thought since ppl are selling this lens at B&S for $900 w/o warranty so why not pay
$40 more for a brand new one? Quite happy with the lens i got.

Haha..u think I worked for them? They will never be able to pay me enough.

I bought 2 lenses from them and they were the lowest I could lay hands on in Singapore (not 100% cheaper for all lenses though as I found 5% lenses cheaper elsewhere). No, I am using their prices as a good benchmark guide for anyone interested. I personally find some prices on the B&S section here unrealistic when you compare their used lenses' prices against DD Electronics' brand new lenses.

Just want to offer anyone an additional avenue to compare prices. :bsmilie:

i got my 15-85 from them too...though they were quite surprised that i got my 60D cheaper than their selling price.

Yah...exactly why I often quote DD's prices on thsi forum because even though theirs are grey sets (it is still the real deal with seller's warranty). It is a good source to start from (especially reviewing the prices against those overly priced used items on the B&S segment).

Not all lenses are cheaper there as I found out recently about a new lens they put up is more expensive - Canon 70-300L IS F4-5.6 at more than 2K!

I went to China Yunnan with 3 lens..

Canon 10-22mm
Sigma 70-300mm APO DG
Tamron 17-50 f2.8 non VC

definitely out of budget of 1k if to purchase these lens even on 2nd hand price..

But they did the job nicely for my trip..

Hi,

Was just thinking of only 1 lens good for range both wide and focal.

i thought your're asking for travel lens??? then bokeh on portrait???:dunno:

It would complete your purpose if there is a canon lens like EF-S 18-200mm f/2.8 IS USM .

The size of the 70-200 2.8 is already a turn off for a lot of people, so i'd imagine this would be really ridiculous in size.

TS can always opt for a sigma 50-500 if they want range in one lens...

Actually I have both the 18-200IS and 70-200F2.8IS. And had used both on a crop before, at then end of the day it the result you are looking.

We are able to do shots like this on a 18-200IS (below 2 shots):

But without PP it can't rival the 70-200F2.8IS (below 2 shots) in it's forte.
