That's still pretty new for a lens. I highly doubt Nikon and Canon will ever release a pro lens starting at 24mm with VR or IS.

why not? I think having VR will be useful on the 24-70mm. Nikon has released some WA zooms with VR.

That is because the 24-70mm is more of a walkabout lens and nikon doesn't want to add extra weight for it, it's already so heavy.

Of course it would be useful but I don't know of any pro graded wide angle lens with VR/IS. The lenses available are all cheap lenses.

Could be, my guess is they don't think it's useful at the wide end and they are probably right.
