Recommendation on camcorders

Hi clubsnappers,

My company needs something that can video and take pictures well. Is that possible with consumer camcorders? I'm just looking at the camcorder's POV as I have a bit of knowledge on the compact and DSLR side.

Did a bit of market research and came out with Panasonic's SD60, Canon HFR18 and Samsung HMV H200.

In DSLR-speak, I'm looking for something like Canon's 550D/60D (sorry, canon user here). Not a 5DM2 nor a 7D due to budget constraint.

I hope some of you can shed some light into what kinda range of camcorders I can look into.

Thanks!

Canon 60D has audio control in video mode which is a big plus.

Sony hdr-xr550e

wow tt's really high-level man. equivalent to canon's 5dm2, in dslr speak? perhaps i'd state my budget as $1,000-$1,500?

but thank you for the recommendation. :)

i'm not looking at dslrs at this moment as I have that covered, i'm looking at camcorders aspect. one that can shoot video and take decent pictures.:)

Have a look at the Sony A55.
Pretty good video IMHO.

If you are choosing a camcorder over a DSLR, then you should get one with clear advantages over DSLRs: namely mic inputs and a headphone jack. Consider the Canon M300 or M31.

that's a good point to note. i shall research on the models you recommend. do you look out for camcorders the same way you look out for dslrs, assuming you do use one? sensor size, megapixel (overrated here too?), etc?

still not looking for a dslr here man. even if i am i'll be going for 60D like one of the members here had recommended.

There are lot's of marketing hype in video sensors. Some (read Samsung) claim to have sensors as large as 1/1.7" but neglect to tell you that the full sensor is only for stills. CMOS have improved in terms of noise but so has CCDs. (eg JVC HM100) Sony EXMOS puts the circuitry behind the sensors to maximise the light capturing surface. New Pany has very clean gain. High megapixels are not that important and may even reduced low light performance. Best way to choose is go hands-on and try out.

read about the new canon xf100,105 any good?

Canon 600D coming out next month

thank you for all the input. i guess i need to research further in this camcorder models before i jump into anything. :) it's really a totally new world.

Hello, I'm looking for a nice digital camcorder, not too pricey, MAC friendly and easy to use. I'm not going to get fancy with my videos, just planning to film family events, birthdays etc. So not really doing major editing or anything like that. Just want something I can film with, and load it to my MAC easily. I'm on MAC OS X.

The best (read ONLY) SD memory card camcorder made specially for iMovie is the Panasonic HDC-SDX1. It records on the extremely rare Apple's iFrame codec, specifically designed for instant editing on iMovie. There are probably only three camcorders to-date that uses this format and the SDX1 is very likely the ONLY one in the world available in PAL. Luckily, it is very cheap. But you will have to order online from Australia (PAL country) though. It is not available for the Singapore market. Don't order from NTSC system countries like US or Japan or you will get a flickering images when you shoot indoors with flourescent lights.
