If you lock it, the focus is not too bad. is pretty nice lens to use.

My understanding of portrait photography are not taking fast moving/action people right?

True...but the lens is too sharp for portraits.

Bros, I new to DSLRs, only started about 3 days ago, and I find myself sourcing for the next lens on my list already.

I'm looking for something that will be good for taking portraits, candid etc and can produce good bokeh. because i'm new and i just spent a bomb on the dslr itself, my budget will be 300 at most.

should i go for a 50mm f1.4 lens? any good ones to recommend?

I'm using the 50mm f1.4 on my A200 now, and its really a good lens, comparable to the 35mm G lens, even though is about 1/4 of the price. To me i felt that 50mm on a APS-C is a comfortable distance, and with 1.4, you can really take most indoor shots without flashes in iso100/200

Not true, It's really depend on the shooting enviroment, i will go for lens rather than flash. But.... if can, get both.

Getting a photo is not easy bro, there are no "definite standards" of what to get, and no absolute truths about what you need and what you don't need.

Neither lens nor flash would get you through if the eye's not there:

The Eye (for composition, location, light, concept)
The Equipment just eases you through.

Nowadays I only have 3 lenses and use only 2 regularly as my workhorses... 17-35 and 70-200. The third one allows me to create special 18 sided stars. :p Broke my photon 300w 1/2 way while shooting last Sunday, swapped to the f56 flash gun and used it off shoe to a similar, though cruder effect.

Wah.. That bad. What happening? wind blow?

Based on what I read, 85-135 is best focal length for protrait, as the portrait will most natural and minimal distortion of the face, compare pics take by 85 with pics by wide angle, you may see the differences abviously. You may also use 50mm, the distortion is not abvious but there is difference between 85mm. IMO.

actually u can use any lens to take portraits, and u can see different effects. :D

85-135mm after adding crop factor?

i got the tamron 90mm F2.8 and Minolta 50mm F1.7 Lens, both the bokeh at F2.8 is good, i normally use 90mm for portrait and the 50mm for traveling and low light condition due to its size and the F1.7 come in handy.

The choice of using the type of lens are mainly a matter of interpretation / taste of individual.

Maybe bring your camera to the shop, take some picture before select the lens to buy.

If money no objection STF is good :D

If you are going for low light shooting conditions for portrait i would recommended a higher aperture like 1.4 - 2.8 as they can produce a nicer pictures as compared to smaller aperture like 4.5.

more poison

think this forum should come with a mandatory health warning - financial health warning label that is....:bsmilie::bsmilie:

Bro,

I just got my Sony 50mm f1.4 because this len is a full frame len. At the price of $500 to $550, it is a good buy. The new 50mm DT is not for A900 use even though you still can use it.

Hence, if you intend to use Full Frame sony body in future, then consider properly.

huh? I thought u jumping to Nikon system?

wow, 50mm F1.4 is now >500.00 SGD..
this is expensive compare to the 50mm F1.7. I brought that for RM 200 only (used) ;p
