Recommendation for hiking shoes?

If possible, avoid shoes with Vibram soles if you're into trekking. The traction sucks on wet surfaces & I slipped a few times wearing them walking in the MacRitchie jogging trail.

wahh but most of the shoes ive seen have vibram soles?! they're like marketed as tho they're some king of soles :think:

my 3rd love for shoes besides photography and audio. TS, can i go along with you when you're buying trekking shoes? i would like a tough pair of shoe. maybe for msia trip or just some day to day good shoe to wear.

Some of the big brands have shoes that do not use vibram soles.

Maybe the medical industry pak kat with vibram. More slips = more injuries = more revenue for hospitals :bsmilie:

antacid: i take it you're living in US? i was tempted to buy from amazon the Merrell Chameleon Wrap Mid Gore-Tex as its only 119USD. it's going for $200 here :think: but when i add shipping and the fact that i cant try before i buy, it's just too risky.

another 'cheapo' way is to go try it at shops for the size, then order online. hehe. you can try looking at campers corner at the capitol..it's between city hall and peninsula plaza. they have some montrail and other brands there.

i think there are different type of vibram soles. the ones i have are very 'grippy' and works well on wet surfaces. try looking at the chaco vibram soles. they are slightly soft, and can be bent or pushed a little. i've seen some vibram soles where the lugs are like bits of thermoplastic, which i always stay clear from because they suck on wet surfaces.

The way I see it, depending on where you go for trekking, you won't really need a pair of hiking boots. Boots will spoil if you don't wear it regularly. I hardly need to use mine in Singapore.

However, if you are doing alot of walking in London, its worth getting a pair. So you could either get it now in Singapore or come over to the UK before buying. There are good deals here in the UK too, if you know where to look.

good point, there are different Vibram soles. going to stores to check the shoes out is the only way to be sure you get wad you want. harder soles would generally have poorer traction on slippery surface.

"army market" also have shops that carry certain brands, but i've never bought from them as i have 2 pairs at the moment, worth checking out b4 buying.

i think im more or less set on getting a pair. the only problem is...do i get a low top or a boot version.

low top: easier to match with clothing, can be worn with berms and ankle socks. but less ankle support. can use when i'm back in singapore too for general usage and walking.

mid cut: bulky, big, but provides waterproofing up till the ankles. not sure if this is necessary in london where it rains a lot? also has good ankle support. however, i'd look very opiang if i wore it alone with berms. :sweatsm: a bit more dificult to use in sg.

Actually, cost of living is not that bad. You just need to shop like the locals in Tesco, Sainsbury, ASDA, etc and the local chinese food store...

You need to learn how to cook. Get the British Council's cook book. Makes cooking easy to learn.

The rainfall in UK is not as bad as in Singapore, so you never need to worry too much. Its like a drizzle most of the time. Think you could check with night86mare though.

You probably could do with a normal cut for UK. I have a ankle support though, and I do love it, but I hardly wear burmudas. Most times in pants anyway. By the time you come here, it would be too cold for bermudas.
