Hey guys.... just a quick check ....

Any recommendations for a CF card with good writing speed for KM5d? Reason for asking is that my "blue-colour" Kingston Elite Pro 50x 1gb is far far slower than the yellow Kingston normal speed 1gb card (wonder anybody else faces the same situation)..... and nothign is more disturbing than missing precious shots cos the memory card cant handle.. haha..since the 5d's continuous shooting is limited by the card due to its limited buffer..

So any recommendations? Hopefully relatively less expensive ones....
Was actually looking at the twinmos 140X 2gb cf card at $69..... anybody has experience with this card?

Thanx in advance!!
:)

dunno abt twinmos. but im using transcend 120x 2gb, works flawlessly with my 5d

Now selling at Comex for only $60 or $62. (Sorry, either SD card is $62 or 60 and the cf is the other price). BBB

I have a Transcend 4GB card, it's pretty fast and relatively cheap... otherwise stick to Lexar or Sandisk... my Kingston cards are also very slow... I guess the 7D is not compatible with the cards... could be KM at fault in not deploying certain specs for CF cards in the card slot... only KM seems to suffer from unreliability and slow read/write characteristics for this card (the Pro) in the DSLR segment...

me using transcend 120X 2 GB. bought it through an MO, not sure still have. works very well. much better than my kingston.

DUN USE THAT KINGSTON ELITE PRO!!!!! it is indeed slower than the orange one, AND IT CAUSED ME TO LOSE ONE WHOLE DAY OF DUTY PHOTOS TAKEN!!!!! it went corrupted.

so, i recommend transcend. lex and san of course good too, but the price is pretty steep. that orange kingston can be used as backup. i have used it on my A1 for almost 3 years and it hasn't given me any problems, other than its slow speed, which is pretty tolarable as a backup.

I have to 2nd the the Kingston Edlite Pro CF are having problems with KM DSLRs. They are extremely slow. I've bought a piece and still used it as backup. No data problems so far though.

Today 02-Sept-2006 get my CF card at Comex. SanDisk Extreme III 1GB - $81
Hall 4 SanDisk counter. Buy 1 CF Get 1 Free "S" small size T-shirt. [what i thing that is small]
when open and see the "S" size T-shirt. actual like "m" size, but the label it said "s". i think is American size ... hahaha

why i dont want to get a bigger size CF?
because 1G for this series is the faster Write / REad compare with 2G
check the perfomance record link on top.

2. dont want to spend too many $$ on it. My target is get 1G "sudah cukup"
====================
just now do some testing on it really can feel the speed. Cool man
oh, my old CF card is Kingston CF Elite Pro 50x 1G.
Maybe tomorrow the price will drop a bit...
OK test my toy first.

Just get either Sandisk Ultra II or Lexar Pro 80x

both are very good... Never have problem with them as yet.

Never settle for less my friend..

Hart

guys, the kingston old cf cards are best. today at comex i bought one each of 1gb and 2gb for $35 (from eastgear - the rip-offs! later i found others selling it for $27.50! no more business from me, EG!) and $55. the old orange tab ones are now badged with a flower picture on the card - check the model number, its very close to the old cf's.

the elite pro is useless on the 5d, slow like a two-legged dog.

hey guys...thanx for the recommendations/links/ feedback....

finally got myself a 2gb transcend card at $62... quite a good buy i must say...

was quite eager to test out the difference between the cards and did a small un-scientific test... timed using agaration and my alarm clock.. haha..just to have a feel of the card..

the test: continuous shooting mode at L size and Fine quality...

the results: Old blue kingston elite pro--> did 8 shots before lagging, and the camera continues to write for 25 seconds before the red lamp goes off....

old yellow kingstons 1gb ----> did 10 shots before lagging.... and red lamp goes off after about 9 seconds...

new transcend 120x 2gb---> did 10 shots before lagging..and the lamp goes off after 3 or 4 seconds...

my views: guess sandisk n lexar might be faster/more reliable.. but balancing between price n performance..for a poor student like me.. i guess the transcend is still quite a good buy... at less than half of what a sandisk of similar capacity would cost...so.. i am happy! :)

thanx guys!
cheers!

good choice! just stay away from those kingstons.

How often do u shoot until the buffer is full? I feel a better test would be to shoot 3 or 4 shots in a row and time the red light going off... that is closer to the real shooting situation... and more consistent also...

Anyway, my LExar 80x took 4 secs to write those 4 shots while the Kingston Elite Pro took 20 secs... identical scene, identical settings...

whats the diff? :dunno:

The point at which u determine the camera lagging is not consistent... so your results are less accurate... that's all...;p

heh... Thanx for the input TME!...i agree that we won't shoot until the buffer is filled up very often... TME's suggestion is to test for situation during the more common scenario of snapping 3/4 shots to capture a sequence of action....and thereafter, recompose... and shoot again...

whereas my "test" was just to let me have a feel of the speed and capabilities of the card...and its potential to capture more shots at 3fps should the situation arise...

and i have indeed experienced situation where i needed to shoot until the buffer is full... eg. NUS Rag day... during my hall's performance...my buffer was perpetually full all the time... and basically the situation was like... compose n focus... hold onto the shutter... and hoping the buffer will clear fast enough for that shot to be registered...there was just too much action going on during the 3 minute performance...and i was like shooting 1 frame every 3 seconds after the buffer was filled..in the end missed many precious shots....(well.. i know i could have waited for the buffer to clear a bit so that i only capture the important shots.. but every shot was important since my frens were in it.. haha :)..so was basically just being trigger happy ;) ) ... another situation would be to capture an entire cheerleading stunt such as a basket toss.. and right after that another stunt which would be missed if the buffer was not cleared fast enough...

Anyway i redid the "test" according to TME's suggestion... took 4 frames, Large size extra fine quality, M mode and Manual focus... the red light took about 20 seconds to clear for the blue kingston elite pro...and 3 seconds to clear for the transcend card..

Well at the end of the day.. as long as we r confident that the equipment we r holding onto can deliver as expected.... I guess thats the most important.

Just to add on as to why this 3 - 4 shot timing is IMO important...

I realise after using the 7D for about 2 years, that it hangs easily when u try to do too many things with the LCD...

Often, I would shoot 3 to 4 shots and review to see whether my shots are in focus or if the exposure is correct for difficult scenes or if I am happy with the composition or to compare with composition is best before deleting... and often when u are shooting on the move (like on a holiday, DIY or tour) u dun have a lot of time to stand and shoot... u have to move on and u need to review quickly... that's where the read/write timing is so crucial.... if u shoot 3 to 4 shots and then scroll through them and then decide to enlarge one of those shots, the 7D will hang... and it will hang irrecoverably... I had to switch off the camera and take out the batteries to recover the camera operability...

If the card writes very quickly, then u have less of this problem for the 7D... for other brands, if u scroll faster or enlarge the picture faster than the camera's processor can handle, what will result is just a lag... but the 7D hangs and that can damage the memory card and wipe all your precious shots for the past few days!!! This happened to me 2x in Korea last week when I was over there for a holiday. It happened once with a Lexar 80X (1GB) and the notorious Kingston Elite Pro 50X (2GB)... it's the fault of the camera and not the cards... and this is minimised with a faster card... I have quite a few heart-stopping moments with the Kingston card when I scrolled and the LCD freezed with red activity LED on... fortunately it hanged only once with the Kingston and was recoverable... I did not lose any shots... this stop-start kind of experience was not repeated with the much faster Lexar card and so there is less tendency for the camera to hang....

BTW, for those of you who have experienced the heart-stopping 'hanging' of the camera's processor (whether 7D or 5D)... u could do this... I switched off the camera and then took out the CF card, then took out the batteries... then I put them back and switched on the camera without the card... switched off again, put back the card and then switched the camera on again... all data was safe... I think perhaps if the crash was bad, removing the card prevents data corruption... not sure if everyone already knows this but I tried this and it works for me the two times my camera hanged so badly that switching off the camera did not switch off the LCD!

The last time the camera crashed so badly was in May as I posted in another thread... exactly the same symptoms... just that that time I did not take out the card and took out the batteries to reset the camera... that might have caused the card to crash irrecoverably and led to the destruction of the card and all its data...:dunno:

on my 5d i've had a few similar instances with the kingston elite pro cards, but each time a power off/ on did the trick without removing anything or putting it back in particular sequence. however i was patient and gave the card some time to attempt to catch up before powering off. i suspect data corruption comes when you review (read) while the camera is still writing to the card from its memory buffer.

the simple way around this, besides disposing of these cards (hey, does kingston do swaps?) the best practice is to learn to shoot without reviewing. it'll be tough at first but it builds your confidence, and other people's confidence in you too! that you know what you're doing.

Anyone use Ridata 4GB 150x ? Any compatibility issue ?
