Recommend potrait lens

Hi all

Been playing around with my A55 in my Japan trip now. Realised i have preference to take expressions of people and like to achieve subject isolation. So i guess lens f1.4 to f1.8 is welcomed. Currently i only have the kit lens 18-55mm, f3.5-5.6 lens.

Any good ones that doesn't cost arm and leg to recommend me? Next question is how do i tell which of the third parties lens are made for Sony? Brands like sigma do make lens for major camera brands as far as i understand.

Thanks for reading ;p

85/2.8.

135/2.8 STF if budget isnt a problem for you

Just a noob question. How come no one recommend beercan? Is it not good for 'semi-snipe' portrait?

its a good lens too! I'm using it. Haha its good but not the best so everyone was recommending you the best hence you see the thousand dollar lenses named here.

The beercan will be a good buy although it might be difficult to find a good one now cuz it has stopped production for many many years.

Haha he mentioned "good ones that doesn't cost arm and leg".. and i was quite surprised all the poisoners so fast tell him to buy CZ liao haha. like me we are only noobs playing around with kit (or trying to get out of kit).. even buying the beercan @ $350 also xin tia liao. haha

while we are on the subject of portrait, or at least street photography of people's expressions: (don't quote me on this i'm still a noob and trying to experiment), but I think that big big aperture is not really the solution. of course dun stick to the kit's f5.6.. that one is quite crap haha.

many times, INSTEAD you find that 'purposely' stopping down the aperture to maybe f2.8 instead of 1.8 makes a better picture.. because you added a little detail of the background, and hence its like adding some context to it. in other words, bokeh is good, too much might or might NOT be good.

i would think that zoom might be able to carry you a further place, because we all singaporeans all shy, so must snipe people haha. too bad i'm low on funds now and not gonna buy a tele for that yet.

try the beercan. there are still a lot of decent copies flying around the place

You can easily afford Sony 85mm F2.8. You maybe able to find one cheaper than beercan.

I test it out with my NEX3 (with A-E adapter). Really not bad. It is also a smaller lens compare with beercan or CZ85, the size is almost the same as 50mmF1.8 or 35mmF1.8. Another interesting fact for this lens, it is a FF lens, so no problem to work with A850 or A900 if you upgrade to FF.
