I've owned quite a few compact camera with price range between $100-$1000.
I strongly recommend you Canon Ixus105, cheap & good! only $199!

i've owned the canon SX 130 IS for the past 2 months and have found it to be a really wonderful camera for the price of 400bucks. i've just came back from NZ and took really many great outdoor pics with it and it looks realy awesome.

anw, i'm selling my camera my SX 130 IS as i wanna upgrade to a DSLR. pls do take a look at my post.

not as gd as the ones already mentioned in the thread, because these use even smaller sensors (1/2.3" vs 1/1.7") and pack more megapixels on the sensor (12mp/16mp vs 10mp). -> you will end up with noisier images.

how close to DSLR quality do you want?

I know that for my budget definitely cannot get very close to DSLR quality and I don't expect that...just as close as possible for my budget.
