No. You need something like a microwave to re-dry the gel. Not worth the effort, IMO, considering that 1) a bottle costs $3.50 and 2) the time, effort n risk involved.

After i got my electric cabinet, i use the gel for my air tight box, where i put my rarely used items, like backup bodies and older lenses. The gel goes a long way if no exposed to ambient humidity.

use microwave oven to dry the silica gel. but ensure that the container/try u use can withstand high temperature. baking wares should do. takes about 10 mins

I bought the Digi-Cabi w/out digital hydrometer 40L from AP for 135 2months ago. I think maybe I go overcharge from this discussion.

Got my 30L Digi Cabi from Carrefour in last year may at $88. Comes with 5yrs warranty.

So far so good, quite happy with it :D

Does anyone know of the "Value" 78 litre dry cab advertised by TANGS in today's ST?

http://www.tangs.com/TangsOnline/TangsOnline.asp?CategoryID=156&ID=2444

I also hear that Am-Pro and Digi-cabi distributor have gone bust and there's no more warranty support from them locally. Does anyone know if this is true or purely fictional?

I found out that the distributor for the "Value" brand one is Rodex Marketing at Tanjong Pagar. No one answer phone but itz 6pm. will try tomorrow.

It might, but it will take ages. The dehumidifying unit inside the cabinet is not designed to dry up silica gel. It's designed to keep the cabinet at a constant humidity.

The Relative Humidity (RH) inside the cabinet will be maintained if the door is not constantly opened. Once open and the RH drops, it will take hours before the RH gets back to the preset. This is normal for all dry cabinets.

A question was asked about the cost of monthly electricity bill in using the cabinet. A simple calculation will tell you the consumption. The dehumidifier unit inside the cabinet is rated at max 5 watts. So leaving the cabinet on 24/7 will come to:

5(watts) x 24(hrs) x 30(days) = 3600watthour. (3.6Kwh)

multiply this by the kwh rate charged by Singapore Power is the cost of using the dry cabinet per month.

In any case, if you value your camera equipment it's justifyable to use the dry cabinet. 'Cos in using the standard dry box with silica gel, don't forget that you'll still have to use a microwave to dry up the gel when it gets pink. Power consumption of a microwave is very high, so LPPL.

My opinion is get one with pull out shelves preferably metal, this will ease putting in and removing items from the cabinet. Brand and size is dependent on your equipment and budget.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the detailed explanation, teerex.

I got a friend who think the in-built hygrometer is not accurate. Hence he bought another hygrometer ;)

its kinda easy to tell whether the dry box is working. it will feel cool on the inside. this is because of the dual function of the thermoelectric micro cooler.

passing a small electric current through it creates a cold surface on the inside and a hot surface on the outside. the moisture condenses on the cold surface and drains to the outside of the box and is evaporated by hotter outside surface. ingenious.

cool temp and dry conditions are good for camera....
:D
